He goes in depth into the diverse influences of religion - from the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants to the strange mania for persecuting witches

The author starts with conditions in Europe at the time of the discovery of the New World, and how it engendered a spirit of exploration and possibility among Europeans.

This an intense and fairly lengthy tome for the layman. It takes you on an almost doable tour of hundreds or years of English history

Informative book

Another gem from Captivating History, but: the rather long introduction is a bit superfluous really, as all the information is repeated in the following text.
Surely, a basic impetus for change during the period in question would have been instigated by the natural increase in population in Europe from some 118m in 1700 to 187m by 1800 - putting an additional strain on villages, and the pressure to allocate land as families grew.

Yes! Buy It!

This was just annoying to me. Most likely, you will enjoy this very much. It makes a seemingly boring topic, quite interesting and easy to follow.

Easy to understand

I found some revelations - for example, I always thought the Magna Carta was about the rights of the common man, but it was really more of a transfer of power from the king to local nobles.

I only take a chance to understand this book after a long day...hence you know it has to be wonderful for me to give it five stars
