The Roman Empire

The author's philosophy of history and his elevation of historiography is a great match for the quantity of his subject, Rome, and the processes of human nature.

A very solid overview

This book was a very solid refresher on history of the dark ages. It wasn’t particularly exciting, but I think that’s what you get for a book that covers such a broad topic. I look forward to finding more specific books about the interesting individuals I heard about here.

A good overview.

While quite light on details, this is a good, easy to listen to, overview of the chronology of the early Middle Ages.
While it’s not a deep dive, It makes for a solid introduction to the subject.

Doesn’t really give much information about the subject

The book addresses the before and after of the dark ages. Some parts of it are interesting
The irony might be that it might hard to write a book about the dark ages because .. it was dark, and there is very little information

I found it okay, not the best one.

I actually haven't seen around to listening all of it yet, but the pieces I've listened to were okay. It didn't interest me as much as I thought it would.

Balanced. and entertaining content.

This is a controversial subject, the author did not choose sides on the pro Empire versus, the pro-progressive notion of state. However, he shed light on the subject of Empire in a most entertaining way.

Excellent insights if a bit stretched

The audible is a pleasure to have if you like history, what an amazing job. Agreed with just about every section.

Lessons from our shared past ..

This is an interesting work with insightful similarities drawn between the two cultures. However, in the end, it feels as though the author hedges to the point that the audiobook loses its impact, and the central question is never answered.

Five Stars for The Dark Ages

The author covers the decline of the Roman Empire in typical 18th-century writing: very wordy. I would like to have seen more dates. A required resource for anyone studying the history of the Roman Empire.

A pleasant surprise

I anticipated a more stinging review of the rapid failure of the Roman Empire. What I found was patience and more history on conditions in Rome.
