NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • THE BASIS FOR THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE • A “riveting” (USA Today) true tale of courage during America’s “forgotten war” in Korea, from the author of A Higher Call and Spearhead

“In the spirit of Unbroken and The Boys in the Boat comes Devotion.”—Associated Press

“Aerial drama at its best—fast, powerful, and moving.”—Erik Larson

Devotion tells the inspirational story of the U.S. Navy’s most famous aviator duo, Lieutenant Tom Hudner and Ensign Jesse Brown, and the Marines they fought to defend. A white New Englander from the country-club scene, Tom passed up Harvard to fly fighters for his country. An African American sharecropper’s son from Mississippi, Jesse became the navy’s first Black carrier pilot, defending a nation that wouldn’t even serve him in a bar. While much of America remained divided by segregation, Tom and Jesse joined forces as wingmen in Fighter Squadron 32.

Devotion takes us soaring overhead with these bold young aviators and into the foxholes with the Marines as they battle a North Korean invasion. As the fury of the fighting escalates and the Marines are cornered at the Chosin Reservoir, Tom and Jesse fly, guns blazing, to try to save them. When one of the duo is shot down behind enemy lines, the other embarks on one of history’s most audacious one-man rescue missions.

An unforgettable story of bravery and selflessness, Devotion asks: How far would you go to save a friend?

After hearing this exceptional story I am thankful to the men and women who serve in the armed forces and for their families. I have read more about the Chocin Reservoir battle and the numerous news account of Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner. What extraordinary people.

As advertised this is a special story of friendship, love, and devotion.

I had read about Brown and Hudner back in the '70's when I was in high school and cried a bit when I reached the end. I thought this story should have been a movie back then, with Rock Hudson as Hudner and Sidney Poitier as Brown. This story of Brown and Hudner reveals a truth that skin color is just that- it does not define what anyone can or cannot do except through societal idiocy and bias. Jesse Brown had two enemies, the communists in the Korean War and the United States. He partially overcame one and was killed by the other. It could have just as easily gone the other way.

Great Story

Devotion captures one of the most inspiring stories of the Korean War. Some of the most challenging flying off the carriers in the most challenging segment of the war. China has entered the war and American on the threshold of victory is suddenly facing retreat during a brutal winter. A winter that makes the Chosin Reservoir a simple name that represents the ultimate courage of both troops on the ground and those who support them from the air.

In the midst of this chaos what might have been an isolated event becomes a triumph of man's devotion to his fellow warriors that reaches across racial lines in the crucible of combat. A story that makes you proud to be an American.

Thrilling Inspiring An American Story
