And the mysterious building in the distance draws all the colonists to it, but when they get there each sees a different motto on the front.

Satirical apocalypse or apocalyptic satire?
Deus Irae is exactly what I would expect from a collaboration between Philip K. Dick and Roger Zelazny, both inimitable writing styles on clear display. I assumed one voice would out-shout the other, but it's a seamless merge.
Most impressive is Luke Daniels' performance. I was on chapter three before I realized it was a single narrator. His character renderings are so distinct I assumed the book was being performed by a cast, as with the Dune series.

Much better than I remember
For quite a while I was put off by the theology being spouted by characters who I don’t believe would talk like that. One the hero is on his trip the story becomes exceptional
The reader’s performance is among the best so have ever listened to.
