"Dear Dope Black Girl, you don’t know me, but I know you. I know you because I am you! We are magic, light, and stars in the universe.” So begins a letter that Tamara Winfrey Harris received as part of her Letters to Black Girls project, where she asked black women to write honest, open, and inspiring letters of support to young black girls aged 13 to 21. Her call went viral, resulting in a hundred personal letters from black women around the globe that cover topics such as identity, self-love, parents, violence, grief, mental health, sex, and sexuality.

In Dear Black Girl, Winfrey Harris organizes a selection of these letters, providing “a balm for the wounds of anti-black-girlness” and modeling how black women can nurture future generations. Each chapter ends with a prompt encouraging girls to write a letter to themselves, teaching the art of self-love and self-nurturing. Winfrey Harris’ The Sisters Are Alright explores how black women must often fight and stumble their way into all rightness after adulthood. Powerful and Life Giving

An excellent listen from start to finish! Brilliantly performed and packed with love, honesty and experience. It directly addresses the challenges faced by black girls and provides understanding and hope. While written for black girls, this empowering book has content that is valuable throughout life and for all women and girls. The positive messages and sage advice are timeless. I see this book being a gift from black women to the important girls and sisters in their life, and as an added gem to the therapist’s collection to recommend to girls, women, mothers and daughters. I highly recommend this powerful book!

Totally compelling!!

I love to give books as gifts, but only books that I love myself. This book is going to all the Black girls I know, from 12 to 22! The writers of these letters have bared their souls and served them up as wisdom. I so wish I had this book when I was a girl!!
