An Appalachian granny woman. A daughter on a crusade. A granddaughter caught between the two.

Maggie McCoury, a generational healer woman, relies on family traditions, folklore, and beliefs gleaned from a local Cherokee tribe. Her daughter, Carrie Ann, believes her university training holds the answers. As they clash over the use of roots, herbs, and a dash of mountain magic versus the medicine available in the town’s apothecary, Josie Mae doesn’t know whom to follow. But what happens when neither family traditions nor science can save the ones you love most?

Daughters of Green Mountain Gap weaves a compelling tale of Maggie, Carrie Ann, and Josie Mae, three generations of remarkable North Carolina women living at the turn of the twentieth century, shedding light on racism, fear of change, loss of traditions, and the intricate dynamics within a family. Author Teri M. Brown skillfully navigates the complexities of their lives, revealing that some questions are not as easy to answer as one might think.

I've gone through a lot of books this year. this one, takes them all. The story is about the complicated relationship between three generations of women, all healers in their own right, and how they navigate their calling to help others while struggling with their own personal conflicts.

I especially loved the special relationship between the granny and her granddaughter. it was incredibly sincere, real, and heartwarming throughout. this is a perfect book for bookclubs and casual readers alike.

I also liked how it brought different cultures, like the mountain people's ways, the cherrokee ways, and the modern ways together.

another thing I really admire, is that this book is a clean read. the language is engaging without being offensive, and there is no explicit sexual content to worry about, making this book safe for all ages, as long as they can understand what's going on. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who loves quality storytelling. I'll definitely be looking out for more books by this author!

by the way, the narrator for the audiobook was fantastic.

best book since where the crawdads sing

I loved this book so much and hated when it was over. So well written. So pertinent to where I live in WNC. I love how so many different beliefs were given equal footing in the story. There is so much I could say about this story, but most importantly, go read it!!

Loved it! Need more!!

I live within 30 minutes of where this story took place and it was nice to be able to picture the story in the area that I know. The story itself was beautifully woven and held me captive from the first to the very end.

Beautiful story
