The Story

Great companion for painting Cured City

This book was a great deal of fun and very well performed. Great companion for painting the miniatures for the Cursed City boxed game that is the setting for this title. if you're a Games Workshop or Black Library fan give this book a listen.

Incredible

This story was an incredible journey that leaves you hungry for what is in coming next. The setting, the writing and a cast of unique characters all add a profound contribution to an exciting story. An excellent book that I wish was even longer.

Weak Hunter

The Vampire hunter was to weak... I'm surprised he survived through his rookie years, let a lone take on older vampires.

Narrator saved this one.

Did not like the story very much and some parts felt like they were rushed.
The narrator did a good job in making the characters interesting.

I would only recommend this book to people that play the boardgame.

Great Worldbuilding

One of the greatest aspects of the Warhammer Universe is while the world and lore is vast, it's content is often delivered in small bite size chunks with it's own unique and impactful flavor.
This was a great sampling of the governing actions and impact of the undead and a few exceptional champions. Worth a read (listen) if you enjoy Warhammer lore, and a fun mystery.

4 stars because it felt a bit repetitive at periods throughout.

Great Prequel to the game

Nice introduction to the characters and definitely grim dark. Great narration. A pleasant starting point to build on the backstory of the game.

Crucial for the Setting

The story is very fluffy and repeats many themes throughout, making it a bit more of a run on than what you may want. The setting and exploration of the world of the Cursed City is done extremely well. Whether you listen to it for fun or are looking for inspiration for your own table top games of Cursed City or Age of Sigmar, I would recommend this is a crucial listen to really understand the mortality and lifestyle of those existing outside of the major battles and grand quests experienced in-game.

Decent book, but where is the game?

Unlike the release novels for Warcy, Beastgrave and Blackstone Fortress, Cursed City is actually pretty good. As with any game-release novel from Black Library, the story is less free and more obvious, but it’s not as bad as the others. It’s a pretty decent dungeon crawler with interesting characters.

It’s more a kin to a warhammer horror novel than a regular Age of Sigmar novel, somewhat fitting the book.

So it’s a tad ironic that the game isn’t available, because with our it, then what’s the point of the book exactly?

Great horror adventure

C L Warner brings the Cursed City to life with great action scenes and intrigue. Well written and flows great. Only thing keeping it from full marks is that it's a little predictable.

Worth it if you’re interested in the board game.

I recently started playing the Cursed City game and this book did a great job of explaining the history of Ulfenkarn, Radukar, and some of his various minions. It set the scene nicely for the board game. Reed did an absolutely cracking job of reading it as well. Some well done, clearly distinct and characterful voices.

That’s about all it’s good for though. If I were to have read it with no intention of playing the game, I would have found it somewhat bizarre, unexplained and woefully unfinished (because, of course, this is presumably only supposed to be the first half of the story, while the game is the other half).

Coupled with that, it suffers from the same problems many Black Libary books do, in that there’s more fighting than actual story and ends up being like listening to a late ‘90s death metal song: ‘gore, blood, flesh, stench, more gore, more blood’. Never heard the word ‘visage’ so many times in so few hours hour. Just another average writer trying to sound more eloquent than he might be, to the point a lot of the flowery language sounds forced and overdone.

As I say though, those are problems I find with many Black Library novels though so if you usually don’t mind their style, you’ll probably be fine with this one.

Otherwise, if you intend to play, or are already playing, the Cursed City board game, definitely give this one a go. Really helps to shed a lot of light onto where it’s set, what’s going on and why.

If you’re not going to play the game though, perhaps not so worth it.
