Resumen del Editor

Comanche Moon completes Larry McMurtry's epic cycle of novels of the American West that began with the Pulitzer-Prize-winning masterpiece, Lonesome Dove.

We join Texas Rangers August McCrae and Woodrow F. Call as they are just beginning to deal with the perplexing tensions of adult life -- Gus, and his great love, Clara Forsythe, Call and Maggie Tilton, the young whore who loves him -- when they enlist with a Ranger troop in pursuit of Buffalo Hump, the great Comanche war chief; Kicking Wolf, the celebrated Comanche horse thief; and a deadly Mexican bandit king with a penchant for torture.

Comanche Moon joins the 20-year time line between Dead Man's Walk and Lonesome Dove, as we follow Gus, Call and their comrades-in-arms -- Deets, Jake Spoon, and Pea Eye Parker -- in their bitter struggle to protect an advancing Western frontier against the defiant Comanches, determined to defend their territory and way of life.

At once realistic and yet vividly imagined, Comanche Moon is a giant of an audiobook and the keystone to a mighty achievement of storytelling. An epic adventure full of heroism, tragedy, cruelty, courage, honor and betrayal, Comanche Moon is the culmination of Larry McMurtry's peerless vision of the American West.

Yes, it was worth the time!

I somehow missed the Lonesome Dove series in the 1980s (too busy) and subsequent reruns. However, I decided to see what everyone was raving about, which, for me, means reading the four-book series. This is the 2nd book, following Dead Man's Walk, even though not the second one written. Probably could be read in any sequence since characters often think back to events of book one. Even with small print, my paperback is over three inches thick, so I opted to also listen on Audible.
The writing transcends time and genre, even though its setting in the 1800s of the Texas llano is a prominent and necessary feature. Characters, even the minor ones, are so vividly drawn that they will long remain in my thoughts. This is a story of love and war, friendships and rivalries, races and cultures, the loss of homeland and the old ways, isolation and solitude, told with humor, insight and empathy, and a good deal of philosophy.

Saddling up now for the third installment, Lonesome Dove. After that, the final in this series will be Streets of Laredo. Happy trails!

Great story!

I loved the story but can't stand Frank Muller's voice. His performance made it nearly impossible to enjoy the wonderful work of Larry McMurtry.

Enjoyable

Well played, Frank Muller. Wonderful story, Larry McMurtry. How does Lonesome Dove beckon? it's all here: the Llano, the Rio Grande, Kicking Wolf, the wild frontier, all interminangled with Texana, the stuff that makes up a breakfast taco on the side of I-10 at 4am.

If you love storytelling, this is for you.

McMurtry at play in his joyous story of Gus and Call in their youth with incredible characters woven into the storyline throughout. Not to miss.

As good as ever

Narrator took a bit to get used to and his sound for women characters was irritating, but you get used to him and the story is as good as the first time I read it!

Good story, bad narrator

The story is typical McMurtry and enjoyable to a fault, but the narrator gets irritating with his constant drawn out word endings, and the irritation starts immediately. A great story (and several $$$) wrecked by a poor narrator.
