Chasing Peace is a guide for turning emotional breakdowns into breakthroughs with the insights of modern neuroscience. It’s the story of a lifelong seeker who suffered years of escalating depression and anxiety, then discovered that the latest practices from brain science offered a path to the peace he longed for.

AN OPEN FIELD PUBLICATION FROM MARIA SHRIVER

Tom Rosshirt, like millions of people chasing peace, put his faith in the scripture of our culture: we find peace by becoming who we want to be. So Tom aimed high, worked hard and excelled. But instead of peace, he experienced debilitating anxiety, depression, and discouraging bouts of brain fog that forced him out of his life. He was one of a rising number of people now getting sidelined by conditions doctors can’t cure. Many sufferers never find their way back, but Tom got lucky. After another dead-end session with a psychiatrist, Tom heard about self-directed neuroplasticity—a daily practice of retraining the brain based on the discovery that pain and illness often start in the brain’s neural circuits, and what the brain learns, the brain can unlearn. After months of using this approach, Tom began to see an alignment between neuroplasticity and the principles of spiritual practice. Reversing the patterns that made him ill did more than make him well; it opened the path from stress to peace—from striving to be who we want to be to becoming who we are.

Brimming with hope, Chasing Peace is for anyone who is sick of chasing peace—but might be willing to read one more book.

Praise for Chasing Peace

"A spiritual roadmap to a better life."
—Maria Shriver

"Chasing Peace is for those seeking the love, grace, and peace of the second half of lifeand who might falsely think they’ve failed after a crisis or a loss. Tom helps us see that loss can be a turning point to find the peace we were born for. I give it my wholehearted blessing!"
Richard Rohr, New York Times Bestselling author of The Universal Christ

"Chasing Peace is a beautifully written book that is poignant, compelling, wise, and funny. It will upend almost everything you think you know about anxiety, depression, addiction and chronic pain. Tom Rosshirt’s story is the story of millions of people who are stuck and trapped and are misled by modern medical practices. Tom’s journey to reclaim his life offers invaluable lessons that everyone should learn."
—Howard Schubiner, MD, author of Unlearn Your Pain

Having been through some of the same health challenges as the author, I found this book to be incredibly inspiring and relevant. I couldn't put it down. It was extremely personally relatable because my decades-long healing journey brought me to many of the same people that Rosshirt was inspired by. Thankfully his voice is helping bring these groundbreaking healing approaches to the mainstream where they belong. For instance DNRS (Dynamic Neural Retraining System, the work of Annie Hopper) and the work of Dr. John Sarno and Dr. Howard Schubiner have revealed truths about health and healing that have been outside the understanding of conventional medicine until now. I have experienced and personally watched others experience life-changing transformations through changing their outmoded thinking about illness. Many, many thanks to the author!!!

Fantastic read, extremely relevant

Great book overall. It's a bit of a slow starter, but it goes into depth about the conflicts related to identity and ego and how it can conflict with our daily lives. The author's experience and journey was also interesting to learn about.

The author worked as a speech writer during the Clinton administration, so understandably, you need an ego and a perfectionist streak in order to succeed at that role. If your speech is poorly written, it not only makes you look bad, but also reflects bad on the VP and the administration as a whole. Very high stress. It's understandable why burnout is rampant.

The author goes into depth about the different mental health issues that can result when trying to hold on to an identity that no longer serves us, but instead starts to tear us down. The need to keep up appearances also plays a role. No one wants to be seen as vulnerable, which is challenging in a culture that values outward appearances.

My favorite section was the chapter about illnesses because he goes into depth about the different doctors that he saw and different therapies that he tried, which didn't help. Having worked in the wellness industry, I've seen this scenario play out with a lot of people. They'll seek out the latest diet, cleanse, detox program, and take 32 different supplements a day, with the hope that it will improve their health and give them energy, but these things almost never help with the underlying problem. These things often shrink your world, and also feed the loop of anxiety and fear.

That said, wellness is a multibillion dollar industry because there's more money to be made catering to people's insecurities rather than addressing the true problem at hand because that takes time and isn't a quick fix.

Goes into depth about the role of identity

Rosshirt gives us a shockingly honest account of his journey through his challenges in life, exploring advanced medical treatments, spirituality, and brain plasticity work. We learn not just about his healing but what is available to us all if we have the courage to see the love and grace that resides just below our insecurities and anxieties.

Inspirational personal journey

I truly enjoyed so much of this story. Tom is a fun narrator. I too had been faced with some serious life altering challenges to find my way out through the DNRS program with Annie!
I loved how the author took us right into the heart of HIS all!
It is a succinct well edited adventure.
I found myself fully engaged with the very emotional personal stories and enlightenments.

I will admit the last 4 chapters had me overwhelmed and not so interested in so many other philosophies. I was fully satiated and right there celebrating with the author long before the sharing of multiple other modalities, every single workshop, quote, and program model done by many others in the field of mind body wellness. I can appreciate paying homage to the ones who assisted the journey, however for me it diluted the triumphant passage to living his best beyond being a prisoner of the past internal fears. My pov aside....
Tom offers many options as he is well educated being a long time student of expanding consciousness.
It appears he has extracted what he feels is the cream of the crop and offers a-lot of information for anyone who may not know where to begin. I would personally start with DNRS and give yourself a chance to see how life reopens.

Being able to laugh about it!
