Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to multiple presidents of the United States. Washington came from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants.
Character Building (1902) is a collection of talks on self-development given to students and faculty at the Tuskegee Institute, of which he was leader. The author stresses the importance of developing oneself for life-long success. He cultivated the highest moral standards in his students, and these speeches represent the core of his teaching.

The thesis of Dr. Woodson's book is that blacks of his day were being culturally indoctrinated, rather than taught, in American schools. This conditioning, he claims, causes blacks to become dependent and to seek out inferior places in the greater society of which they are a part. He challenges his readers to become autodidacts and to "do for themselves", regardless of what they were taught.

Building Character Today
I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It served as a great reminder of so much that is missing in multiple generations today. Living in a world where people don’t read much, much can be gleaned from these short insightful chapters. Building character is a process not a destination.
