Resumen del Editor

If you suspect you've got a personality disorder, read on to discover treatment options and more!

Do you feel that your moods and feelings are out of control? Do you unintentionally hurt your loved ones with your unpredictable behavior? Do you, sometimes, make regrettable decisions because you're blinded by your emotions?

Uncontrollable mood swings and erratic behaviors don't make you a bad person. Most probably, you simply need to take care of your mental health. And, last but not least, you're not alone.

Around five million people in the USA have bipolar personality disorder, and almost 10 percent of the population have borderline personality disorder. Violent mood swings, extreme emotional responses, and difficulty making wise decisions can be symptoms of both.

But what if someone gave you a toolkit of effective coping strategies and taught you how to control your emotional responses even when you're overwhelmed? What if someone showed you how to cultivate healthy, satisfying relationships? What if someone explained your treatment options and helped you choose the best ones?

This is exactly how this two-in-one audiobook will help you.

As you listen to the audiobook, you will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of bipolar and borderline personality disorders
  • Improve your well-being by learning valuable coping strategies
  • Discover surefire strategies for managing your emotions and avoiding bad decisions
  • Learn how to help a child, family member, or romantic partner who struggles with borderline or bipolar personality disorder
  • Get to know effective treatment options that include medication, therapy, and natural methods

Informative but the writing is strange

This is the weirdest nonfiction audiobook I have ever heard. On the one hand, I have read a lot about BPD and I found the material to be very thoughtful and accessible. This book provides a lot of useful insight into how people with BPD (mis)interpret interpersonal relationships. It explains how some of the maladaptive behavior patterns start to make more sense once we understand the (sometimes incorrect) assumptions that people with BPD are making about the actions and motives of people around them. This understanding helps to explain actions that seem bizarre or counterproductive to people working from a healthier set of assumptions.

On the other hand, there are places where it seems like a thesaurus was arbitrarily used to replace words, or sentences were auto-translated from another language. This leads to phrases and sentences like: “You may find yourself putting many of the energy into the individual with BPD at the expenditure of your own emotional requirements”, and “The time to tell others you have bipolar disorder is right or wrong”, and “certain natural remedies can help with bipolar disorder...nevertheless, after talking to your doctor, it is necessary not to use these treatments”. It is fairly easy to see what the sentences should say, but this can be a bit distracting. It is rare to find a book that blends clinical and patient insight, so this is worth a listen. But be prepared that you may need to decipher some of it.

Not as helpful as expected.

Written primarily as a defense for the person diagnosed and seems to almost “justify” the extremely difficult behaviors. A bit of a “blame game” and excuses instead of focus on improvement and acceptance of personal responsibility.
