Audited by a monster—sounds awful, right?
I knew I shouldn't have opened my door, but when a seven-foot descendant of a death god comes calling, you answer.
Especially if this Anubis is from the government, but I don't have anything to hide from the IRS.
Right?
Right?!
Turns out, my mom—a.k.a. my business accountant—does.
Now, every time I turn around, he's there.
Assessing.
Advising.
Arousing me until I can't think straight.
But I don't need a stranger to fix my problems. I'm doing just fine on my own, and I swear the only thing crumbling in my life is the topping on my amazing fruit cobblers.
Will I let Ahnou past the defenses I've built around my heart, or is my fall about to get taxing?

Such a cute story!

The lore of the setting was also intriguing, not too bare bones and leaving no obvious questions to answer. More than enough to provide the backdrop for an escapist romantic fantasy.
Now I do want to warn for some of the potentially triggering content, for those who might think this is an entirely cozy read, and spoilers ahead! There's a mother who's emotionally and financially abusive (and eventually tries assault), an abusive ex who also escalates from on-page verbal abuse to attempted murder, and destruction of property via a house fire.
There's also some acknowledged dubiousness about "accidentally forever marrying someone because I lost control in the throes of passion" but that is overall pretty light. I will also note this book begins to lean more and more into "het A/B/O" as it continues, since that's not for everyone. It's not my preferred thing but I didn't mind it here, especially since as noted above the characters are into switching up roles rather than having one specific dynamic in bed. And I did have some amusement comparing Ahnou's "My alpha is X" to FSG's "My inner goddess is X."
A fun read if you like spice

Things that killed this for me:
1. Her mom was awful for 0 reason.
2. The MMC referred to her being wet as her “slick”.
3. Her comparing her dyslexia to being as bad as her friend being a “monster” who had lost both her parents.
4. The constant body shaming - I know the MMC talked about liking her figure but there was no arc around her own feelings of confidence or self worth so it just kinda ended with “my body is awful and I’m fat and that’s awful”.
5. The random inclusion of kink bdsm culture which the FMC all of a sudden is very knowledgeable and accepting of even though 2 chapters prior she knew almost nothing about her sexuality?
This author has great ideas and I’m sure the books getting stronger as they go along but this one was a definite struggle to get through.
I wanted to love it but cringed the whole time

Monster romance that starts out with one of an adults worse fear. Getting audited by the government for missing taxes.
The female lead is starting her story out when a monster comes to tell her she owes major money to government and her mother who was responsible for handling that aspect of her business, has dropped the ball. Understandably, she’s extremely upset and the male lead who tells her this, then finds himself going into an almost rut. A connection that nether can explain happens so fast. But her mother and ex husband pops in and to explain the situation, they pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend. More drama is unrolling when secrets come to light. The one person she can lean on is a stranger who soon will be more.
My review.
Frustrating is one of my feelings in this story and mixed feelings a lot. Does this mean it’s bad. No but not my cup of tea. There was to many logical fixes to there problems that I grew irritated. But at the near end of this story. They expose a new secret that explains her actions that makes her responses ok. I just wish her being a massive push over was not a main character flaw in her or that a few secrets exposed earlier.
I also felt this book romance kicked off way too fast. 10min into the story and there heavy petting. But this is also explained in the end why the need was so strong. Even with that. I felt like it took from the relationship aspect and gave more porno vibes in the start.
Character review.
Female lead came off weak. But she was emotional abused by her mother throughout her childhood and then her ex husband. The few family members who treated her well are no longer alive. Her mother is the real monster in this story and can be hard to listen to. Body shaming and intelligence shaming and more. Even with her issues and unnamed bond. She starts her own business and makes it a success. Which redeems her in the personality area.
The male lead is logical man who treats women right and is disturbed by the actions happening in her life. But rather then push her to his ways on correcting problems. He supports her in all ways. In the start of the book. He bonds with her but on accident. Rather than force her to forever mate. He holds the truth and lets her have control over it all. Even if it causes him pain/discomfort. He also has an alpha voice in he’s head kind of. Like he is two in one person. Which I did not understand this bit. I felt more explaining would help on this.
Side characters also have a little side story added in. Which I liked. You felt more part of the story when you can understand all characters who are part of it.
Narration review
All together they did a good job. I was able to connect to the characters and understand situations happening. but I felt some of the characters emotions did not come through strong for the male reader. Like he was reading off of a book. Maybe it was the male lead character personality but even in the sexy times. Was a little bland.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes mostly for those who like this type of book. Short story with sex, monster/dog people, and building emotions.i do feel this was overpriced. 5 hours for over 20bucks is to much. 10 would have been better.
The storyline was not bad. I believed if they would have explained a few things earlier then you would not feel so frustrated at some parts. But everything that frustrates you in this book has a reason for it and you can relate to characters better knowing this.
This is another reason why this book is good. They have so many twist and turns. The characters can bring out emotions like frustration and sympathy.
I really believe if the author moved a few things around. This would have been great. She has all the great parts for the best book. But the telling needs to
Be more smooth. Some parts feel rushed while other feel dragging. But not a horrible book. Not one I’d re listen to because it’s not for me.
