In this hilarious gay fantasy romance, a reclusive sorcerer is forced to protect a cowardly knight after a prophecy ties their fates together. Funny, touching and inventive, this brilliant debut is perfect for fans of How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying and Dreadful.

In Which Many Dangerous and Homosexual Things Happen.

All his life, Sir Cameron has stayed as far away from danger as possible. He is quite frankly too handsome to die a pointless death in battle. But then the Church hands down a prophecy to his fellow knights: the only way to defeat their nemesis, the mad sorcerer Merulo, is to kill Sir Cameron. Short of ideas, Cameron throws himself on the mercy of the one person who now actually wants him to survive: the mad sorcerer.

Merulo isn’t thrilled to be babysitting a spoilt, attention-seeking knight, but transmogrifying him into a vulture is at least entertaining. Cameron, meanwhile, is on a voyage of self-discovery. It turns out he’s really, really into surly sorcerers who lock him up and tell him what to do. Who knew?

As a legion of knights surround their stronghold, the sorcerer’s poisonous ambitions draw ever closer to fruition. Cameron is quite invested in not dying, but he finds he’s also invested in Merulo. And sometimes, supporting the sorcerer you care about means taking an interest in their hobbies. Even if that hobby is trying to kill God.

Even if it might get you killed, too.

The story took a strange turn in the second half (and given the first half of the book that’s really saying something) but to be honest I felt like the plot really takes a back seat to the characters in this one. The two main characters are the epitome of Grumpy vs. Sunshine which usually leaves me disliking Grumpy but in this case it just heightened the comedy for me.

The other perfect element was the narrator. I really don’t know if I would enjoy this book as much in print as I did in audio, as he’s got just the right tone and timing.

So much fun

I did not expect twist number one, and very much did not expect twist number two. The narrator does a few voices very distinctly and doesn't have any sibilant or wetness to his style, which I very much appreciated. The story itself is definitely one you can't really just play in the background because I found myself going back a minute or two at a time to try to understand how the hell Cameron came to THAT conclusion, only to laugh. There are clearly some very sweet and also very dark elements to this story that you're entirely shielded from because the two predominant POVs are so wrapped up in themselves and their own preconceptions that neither sap nor depression can penetrate the POV's thick skulls. Highly recommend!

Fun, and not a Background Listen

Best book I’ve read this year. If you’re expecting a run of the mill romantasy, this probably won’t be for you. But if you’re into satirical fantasy (British-type humor; think In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan) with a queer romantic subplot—you’ll love it.

Loved it

Silly, irreverent, well written, and an absolute joy to listen to. I’ll be purchasing the book as well to support to author AND own a very good piece of literature. The narrator does well. Inflection and feeling fit the words. The characters come to life when he reads them. I have not once scrunched up my face and fallen out of the story because a sentence feels wrong, or the narrator pronounces something in an insane way, or the story itself takes a turn for the worse. Very happy to have stumbled across this

That’s the good stuff

usually I just write reviews on books that aren't any good but this one was exceptional. The wit, the narration, everything was great. It's a good break from the usual gay story that makes all the political and social agenda stances they can within the first chapter.
Anyone could read/listen to this book and enjoy it. gay, bi, straight, etc

Happy to have found it!

Really funny and original.
