Resumen del Editor

Robert MacFarlane has written that language does not just register experience, it produces it. Our religious language in particular informs and shapes our understanding of God, our sense of self, and the way we make sense of our challenging path back to loving heavenly parents. Unfortunately, to an extent we may not realize, our religious vocabulary has been shaped by prior generations whose creeds, in Joseph Smith's words, have filled the world with confusion. I make all things new, proclaimed the Lord. Regrettably, many are still mired in the past, in ways we have not recognized.

In this audiobook, Fiona and Terryl Givens trace the roots of our religious vocabulary, explore how a flawed inheritance compounds the wounds and challenges of a life devoted to discipleship, and suggest ways of reformulating our language in more healthy ways all in the hope that, as B. H. Roberts urged, we may all cooperate in the works of the Spirit to find a truer expression of a gospel restored.

A beautiful work of healing, It helped me find peace where I least expected it.

Beautiful

This is the second book I have listened to by the Givens. This, like "The God Who Weeps" was beautiful, clarifying and thought-provoking. It is quite cerebral, I found that I had to give it my full attention to comprehend the concepts being examined and taught. This book helped me to reframe a lot of the myths that I had formerly absorbed about God, sin and Atonement and showed me that God is more inline with my own experiences and understanding of our relationship with them and how They really are. I love Fiona's reading of the book, she gives the words greater meaning and heart.

Definitely worthwhile

Reading (or listening not overly distracted) this work is like cleaning a dirty lens by clarifying truths of Christianity we are probably familiar with but get soiled by numerous influences we may hardly be aware of. This work is a great contribution to show the ongoing process of Restoration as both personal and institutional and where Reformation is not Restoration. It elucidates at least some of the "plain and precious" eternal truths that have been lost to the world at large and are now available to us through the ongoing work of Restoration; and most importantly what that means to us in our daily lives and relationships to everyone and everything- essentially being healed through the love of God. The narration by Fiona Givens is excellent.

fantastic book!

this book is fantastic! it feels like the culmination of many books that the Givens have written. I have read all of them, and this was my favorite. there is so much hope and love in its pages that I felt inspired to write a review even though I never write any reviews for any of the many audiobooks I have listened to. listen to it! you will not be disappointed.

this book is especially great for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints as they try to frame their beliefs in the larger context of Christendom as a whole. it gives fantastic yet brief history on important Christian doctrines and proposes new conceptions of these doctrines. ultimately the greate hist praise I can give this book is it has made me want to be a better person and to love my neighbor and improve my relationships. thank you Terryl and Fiona Givens!

A terrific rediscovery of the amazing truths found in the modern restoration of the church of Jesus Christ.

Oh, to clarify to ourselves the definitions, we so regularly used to describe our experience and spiritual journey in the church

God is love, Trust that and move forward.

Wonderful historical context illustrates the significance of cultural and that there is truth in many places. We are all in this together and we are not left alone to figure it out.

Brian

I loved this book. I need to get a print version so I can properly cite passages. may the Givens continue to write and speak and continue to enlighten. Sin isn't cause for punishment - it is need for healing from The Healer. Righteousness isn't a solitary endeavor, it is being with and strengthening others, just as Jesus heals and comforts us.

Really Great Writers and Researchers

Such great writing and research and a very important set of topics to tackle. These things need to be known by more people. Nothing bad about the content whatsoever, and it’s very profound, so it’s probably better in book form for not taking on the margins. Also, and this is the only bad I can say, is that the narrator’s voice is perfect for falling asleep to, not keeping the mind engaged on such great content. Her voice lulls while the content stimulates thinking. Hard combination to stay focused on.
