Serendipity works wonders for a woman and her seemingly unattainable crush in a funny and flirty short story by Christina Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of The Unhoneymooners and My Favorite Half-Night Stand.
When marketing consultant Veronica accidentally crashes the wrong Zoom meeting and brutally critiques their presentation, she’s shocked to receive a job offer from the company’s intriguing CEO. Their professional email exchanges quickly turn flirty, but Veronica’s mind keeps drifting to her reserved but gorgeous new neighbor. As Valentine’s Day approaches, she’ll discover that sometimes the most improbable meet-cute can lead to the perfect match.
Christina Lauren’s Accidentally Yours is part of The Improbable Meet-Cute: Second Chances, stories for star-crossed lovers and hopeless romantics. They can be read or listened to in one sitting. Let’s do it again.

The basic premise of this story revolves around Veronica, a recently unemployed marketing consultant, and Jude, a programmer turned reluctant CEO of a technology company. The two end up meeting when Veronica accidentally crashes Judes companies marketing meeting and anonymously trashes the terrible marketing pitch deck being presented.
Jude, impressed by Veronica’s candor and in need of marketing help, ends up tracking down Veronica and trying to convince her to come help his company. Little do either of them know, they are also neighbors living in the same Chicago apartment building.
The story is told mostly through digital communications. The tale unfolds through a series of text messages and emails. Which is an interesting framing device for telling this story.
Being a short story, everything in this novella happens on a shortened time frame. The attraction and flirtation build up quickly, as does the eventual resolution. Readers may find themselves wishing for more from the story, which in some ways can be a positive sign from a novella.
Ultimately, the story succeeds because it understands the goals of the format. It’s not trying to be sweeping or epic in scope, and it does not outstay its welcome. It’s a meet-cute story told with the modern world in mind, full of clever dialogue and playing with the idea that the right person might appreciate you for the unfiltered version of yourself and be closer than you expect. If you’re looking for something that can scratch that romantic itch and do it in a single session, then this little romantic escape with its sharp banter and digital intimacy might be exactly what you need.

She’s funny, if a bit of a try hard, and he’s sweet. Proof that Buckeyes and Wolverines can co-exist.
The narrators do a good job.
