Two from the master of the legal thriller:

A Time to Kill:
The life of a 10-year-old black girl is shattered by two drunken and remorseless young men. The mostly white town reacts with shock and horror at the inhuman crime, until her father acquires an assault rifle and takes justice into his own outraged hands.

For 10 days, with burning crosses and the crack of sniper fire spreading through the streets of Clanton, Mississippi, the nation sits spellbound as young defense attorney Jack Brigance struggles to save his client's life...and then his own.

The King of Torts:
When Clay Carter of the public defender's office reluctantly takes the case of a young man charged with a random street killing, he assumes it is just another of the many senseless murders that hit D.C. every week. But as he digs into the background of his client, Clay stumbles on a conspiracy too horrible to believe. He suddenly finds himself in the middle of a complex case against one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world, looking at the kind of enormous settlement that would totally change his life - that would make him, almost overnight, the legal profession's newest king of torts.

A Time to Kill is REAL Grisham. It's a good story that makes one think about his position on important issues ... and then re-think it. I don't always arrive at the same conclusions the author leads his readers to, but I do appreciate the exercise. Michael Beck did a masterful job of bringing this tale to life.
The King of Torts is such a letdown that it's hard to believe Grisham actually wrote it. Please tell me he didn't! The dialogue is blah, blah, blah. The characters are just blah. The only redeeming quality is Beck's narration.

I'm a HUGE John Grisham fan, and A TIME TO KILL and THE KING OF TORTS are 2 books definitely worth listening to.

A TIME TO KILL: This book deals with a courtroom drama that could definitely impact many fathers in today's time. Nothing is more important to any man than his family, and many of us would probably do the same thing that's detailed in this book. Other reviews have criticized the use of the "N" word, but the listeners of this book need to remember that that was a common term used in that timeframe. I'm just as ashamed of this word is anyone else, but it is part of our history that we have to accept. Yes, I understand some people getting upset about the use of this word, but the word history needs to be remembered and accepted as well. While it's not a prestigious part of our history, it is still our history. I would highly recommend this book.

THE KING OF TORTS: To be honest with you, I never really knew what a tort lawyer was. The main character in this book is a lawyer that finds himself caught up in a chance to forever change his financial life, and it would be difficult for anyone to pass up the amount of money that these type of lawyers make. Does he get greedy? YES. Does he succumb to the temptations of quick and fast money? YES. Is it something that many of us would do in the same situation? MAYBE. Either way, this is a great story that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end.

2 EXCELLENT BOOKS WORTH LISTENING TO

This could only have been marginally better if Frank Muller were still alive. Beck + Grisham = redneck southern voice, literally and literarily, respectively. Another brilliant performance by Beck. How to describe Beck? What if John Boy Walton had a sense of humor? Yes, that's it, y'all !

Brilliant voice of the south

I read this book several years ago, but didn't have copy and wanted read it again. I enjoyed it then and enjoyed it again. I was working in large corporate America the first and now own my own business. It was definitely a different perspective this time. Big risk and big reward plays and such a gamble. I think this is one of his best books.

Read both books and loved listening in the current environment. Treat yourself in the lockdown.

Read both and enjoyed listening.

Decent story, exciting twists, and an enjoyable listen. The plot may seem far-fetched, but it really is more realistic than you might realize.

Decent Story About a Crazy Area of Law

As usual, great characters. Awesome story I've listened to this over and over and I am never disappointed.

Not my favorite JG book, but in my top 3

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and I am SO impressed by Michael Beck’s ability to create different voices to animate each character. On top of that, he brings tension and excitement to the dialogue. I’d never really thought of voice work as acting, but that is what Beck is able to accomplish.

The novel is also great, but everybody knows of John Grisham. The reading is what needed a shout out here. :)

GREAT reading!

I thought A Time To Kill was excellent, and the narrator was totally on his game. King of Torts was not as good. I almost quit listening to it after several hours because it became too predictable. It did pick up though and wasn’t too bad.
