Thirty-year-old Barbara Weaver was content to live as the Amish have for centuries - without modern convenience - but her husband, Eli, wanted a life beyond horses and buggies. Soon he gave in to the temptation of technology and found ways to go Online and meet women. When Barbara was found dead, shot in the chest at close range, all eyes were on Eli... and his mistress, a conservative Mennonite named Barb Raber.

Barb drove Eli to appointments in her car. She gave him everything he asked for: a laptop, rides to his favorite fishing and hunting spots, and sex. Above all, she gave him the cell phone he would use to plan a murder. The Weaver case marked only the third time an Amish man was suspected of killing his wife in more than 200 years in America. But the investigation raised almost as many questions as it answered: Was Barb Raber the one who fired the fatal shot? Or was Barbara Weaver dead before someone entered the house? What did Eli's friends, family, and church really know about him? And will life among the "Plain People" ever be the same?

A very mundane telling of a murder, and what you know from the beginning is all you know at the end.

Although the narrator has a lovely voice, I felt that it was a poor choice for a true crime story

Soft narration

Very interesting look at a crime in an Amish community. Good read if you enjoy true crime or are interested in the Amish communities.

Fantastic true crime

Tedious. Needs editing. TMI. It stoned on and on and on. Couldn’t finish listening to it

Boring

A Killing in Amish Country by Greg Olson and Rebecca Morris audio version is a compelling read. Pictured as quaint storybook, like people, the Amish are anything but. Dissatisfied with the constraints of Amish living, Eli hopes to dispose of his wife, Barbara, in order to allow him the freedom to live the life he desired. With the assistance of his Paramore/taxi driving conspirator, Eli’s wife also named Barb is found murdered in her bed by her children. At the trial, his double life is exposed for all to see. The book addresses the shortcomings of the different Amish sexts and their views regarding the doctrine.

Carline Marlo’s narration adds an element of “being there” while listening on Audio.

Olson’s true crime books are addictive and tell the story in a satisfying manner.

A common compelling read

In a very unusually closed community it is amazing how these authors are able to gather such intimate details.
great job!

Gregg Olsen and co -author Morris are amazing.

I learned more about the history and beliefs of the Amish. Sadly, nothing in the culture prevents sexual sadists and narcissistic psychopaths from walking among them, but like too many religions, there is plenty to protect pedophiles and domestic abusers from accountability. Well written and told, but the cut and dried story from news media left out a fair number of questions.

Way more interesting than I expected

i enjoyed the overqll story. Maybe a bit too centered on sex but tells it like it is sometimes!

Educational

I found this while looking for Gregg Olsen's book A Twisted Faith: A Minister's Obsession and the Murder That Destroyed a Church. It was mentioned in the Dateline Episode 1, Season 8.

Interesting and well told

Great story that made me want to NOT put the book down because each chapter left me wondering what happened, so I had to read the next. It got a little confusing going between characters, but it did all come together at the end.

Wondering
