Best-selling author Patrick O'Brian became a legend with his beloved Aubrey-Maturin seafaring tales. O'Brian received further attention with the critically acclaimed film adaptation, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won two.

When O'Brian passed away in 2000, he left behind three chapters of what was to be the 21st Aubrey-Maturin novel. The tale was to have followed Jack Aubrey in his new post, Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron.

Although it remains unfinished, 21 gives us one final glance at the unparalleled genius of a master craftsman and the series The New York Times Book Review hailed as "the best historical novels ever written".

Reseñas de la Crítica

"For Aubrey/Maturin addicts, there could be no better gift: a new, albeit incomplete, story with freshly piquant details, wry humor and salty nautical action." (Publishers Weekly)

This novel was shaping up to be a great one, worth a listen even though it is unfinished. Thank you Patrick O'Brian for the gift of these books.

An Excellent End

It will be difficult for anyone ever to live up to Patrick Obrian’s storytelling prowess, his character development, his dialogue, or his historical content. I will read the all again in 5 years. And I look forward to the experience.

Sad to see these books end. Patrick O’Brian is a master

The only thing wrong with this book is that Mr. O'Brian did not have a chance to finish!

farewell wherever you fare, Patrick O'Brian!

A nice coda to the series. Unfortunately, it does not include O'Brian's handwritten continuation of chapter 3, found in the printed book, but goes only to the end of the typescript. In the manuscript pages we learn of the confrontation and duel between Maturin and Miller, as well as a few further details. This material is less worked-out than the typescript, somewhat choppy and discontinuous, but it would have been good to include in the reading, if only to reach a moment of conflict before the text breaks off.

Does not include whole text of printed book

A fitting parting for the reader from Jack, Stephen, Patrick O'Brian, and Patrick Tull who gave the characters their voice.

A perfect and wonderful farewell...

I was disappointed that the audible“book”, I bought was more of a very few chapters from an author whose 20 book adventures I have enjoyed so thoroughly that I have purchased them all in the original book format.

Imagine my joy when, after many years I discovered the title “The Golden Ocean”. After consuming the story, much the same as men rescued from many days in the ocean, will with food and drink.

After many years of trying the various combined efforts of Mr. O’Brian and other authors, (I found like the ships crew’s experience with the yellow cabbage on Desolation Island), you can survive on it, but it’s not going to leave the same taste as what you’re used to.

I heard of this title, my heart soared with great happiness and expectations of the joy to come. Only to be splintered in the same manner as a 32 lb. chaser at close quarters will do to a wooden ship, by the farcical notion of this title being a book, THREE chapters and a commentary as long or longer that the chapters, doesn’t a book make.

A very short 21

Oh! One last taste of the genius of O'Brian. I had thought his last books showed him slowing down, losing interest, aging perhaps. But here, in his just-begun No 21, he's at full powers, backed by the great Patrick Tull. You know when you put it down that his O'Brian's fertile mind had seamlessly contrived to get Jack and Stephen to meet the monster of the age...Napoleon. Shows a major novelist going out on top.

A poignant end to a truly amazing series. The afterward is a wonderful way to wrap up this in complete finish. I'm very happy that they included it in this recording.

After reading the entire Aubrey–Maturin series, I wish that “21: The Final Unfinished Voyage of Jack Aubrey” wasn’t found and left alone with Patrick O'Brian’s passing. The final 63 pages should have been kept a secret and should have never been published. That being said, as an audiobook listener, it is very rare to have the same reader throughout the complete series, especially for something that is this epic. I’m really happy that Patrick Tull was still healthy to perform the final voyage. It wouldn’t be the same without his voice. There is no doubt that the author was an extraordinary writer, but the series wouldn’t be the same without a remarkable voice to the audio.

Remarkable Voice

I only write reviews when something is atrociously bad or top tier. 99% of books are only worth reading once; I can’t wait to read the whole series again. Certainly, this series is the best I have ever read.

Truly a joy to read
