Out of print for many years, this is a brand new edition of the definitive companion to the acclaimed Aubrey-Maturin series of novels, written by the author himself.

What was daily life in Nelson's navy really like, for everyone from the captain down to the rawest recruit? What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of watches? How were the officers and crew paid, and what was the division of prize-money?

These questions and many more are answered in Patrick O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremacy.

The meticulously researched text provides an unparalleled insight into life during wartime in the Napoleonic era, and offers a wonderfully evocative companion to the world of Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin.

Obviously, the author of the work deserves a large part of the praise. But, the performance by Ronald Pickup was perfect - for my learning style. This is a series heavily laden with knowledge very difficult to locate - or learn. I will listen to this rendition multiple time. I have become enamored with these specific sea tales. This specific nearly two hours has literally taken me to another significant level in understanding, learning and enjoying the history and the conditions with which these brave men were confronted. I feel closer and more appreciable of this history. Not an expert, by any means - yet. I now have an excellent, authoritative source to develop my vision into this fascinating period of our history. I am greatly indebted to Patrick O’brian and Ronald Pickup for their work and tutelage in this journey! Do not miss out on this gem, you won’t be sorry - I guarantee it!

Terrific Education and Marvelously Presented
