Acerca de esta escucha

A spellbinding dark dystopian fantasy trilogy from hugely popular dark romance author Nicci Harris, where young Aster is sworn to be a servant to the ruthless half-human King Rome, but when the king becomes obsessed with this ordinary girl, it could lead to war.

Young Aster is no different. If selected, she will be the King’s Silk Girl. A common human bred to adore and pleasure him, and to provide the Cradle with healthy babies for the Trade.

Adore. Pleasure. Provide.

That is her meaningful purpose.

But King Rome is more monster than man. As the heir of the genetically enhanced breed, he was designed to survive and rule this harsh new world. Through fear. Through intimidation. Rome has a heart as black as his giant pet eagle’s wings and a singular obsession—to reign.

That stands until one day Aster puts her tiny human hand in his...

Now she occupies his mind...

But the Trade upholds that love is not a virtue, and instead, a weakness. Nothing could be more dangerous to the regime than having its merciless king obsessed with a common girl born for Silk

Why didn’t I read/listen to this before?

From the world building to the character development, everything about this story was pure poetry and perfection and I cannot wait for what’s coming next! The emotions rollercoasting through me as I read were insane and I really didn’t want to get to the end of it. IS THAT GOOD!!! And having CJ and Sean as the voices of Rome and Aster?! Pure magic! I couldn’t cast it better if I tried!

If you’re into dystopian worlds, forbidden romances and a possessiveness that knows no bounds and will do anything for their love, I highly…HIGHLY…suggest you pick this up ASAP!!!

Can’t wait for book 2!

So strange but very good

This is unlike any book I’ve read- post apocalyptic isn’t really my vibe but this was really interesting. Astor is kind of hilarious and definitely grew on me as the book went on. I’m a fan!

Good listen.

I didn't get overly annoyed by the FMC and the MMC was not a super dick and his character development was sweet.

Sean Masters is the perfect Rome

Interesting and unique dystopian premise that is just a backdrop for the main romance story. As long as you are aware of that and are not expecting crazy, detailed world building, then this is an enjoyable story. Sean Masters was perfect as Rome with his deep, velvety voice. CJ Bloom read this a little too child-like and naive so I ended up reading her chapters, instead of listening on audiobook. This book was done in dual narration, not duet, in case others were curious.
Rome is an OTT, alpha MMC that is possessive while also being a sweet cinnamon roll to Aster.

Meh

I had high hopes for this one. It wasn’t bad, but you know when you just keep listening thinking isn’t going to get better? Well, this one didn’t get better. I did like three premise of the story though. The male performance was spot on. The female, however, was just off. If she had read the character as less of a child and more adult, maybe I would have enjoyed it more. Also, the chemistry just wasn’t there for me.

Started out great but then turned mediocre

I initially had high hopes for this book. The world-building is terrific, especially the intriguing twist on the Ottoman Empire’s harem system—where, historically, a newly chosen Sultan might execute his brothers. In this story, it’s unclear which woman the King has chosen to bear his children because he selects only one, adding a compelling layer of mystery at first.

However, as we learn more about the King, he comes across as a complete lunatic—similar to the worst dictators, from Mugabe to the most unhinged Roman emperors. He executes people without hesitation, and what’s even more disturbing is that the female protagonist finds this ruthlessness attractive. It’s hard to understand how anyone could view such a violent, unstable individual as a romantic figure. To me, this isn’t romance; it’s more like Stockholm Syndrome. I worry about younger readers who might see this as desirable or glorified, without grasping the very real consequences of such behavior in real life.

The sex scenes are adequate but quickly become repetitive. In general, the book seems targeted toward a younger audience with little real-world responsibility—those who haven’t yet faced the realities of adulthood. If you’re over thirty, you may end up feeling as disappointed as I was.

Lastly, on the audiobook production side, I noticed multiple errors where the narrators used the wrong words, which were never corrected. These mistakes detracted from the overall experience and underscored my frustration with this novel.
