These 2025 audiobook trends are telling, to say the least

These 2025 audiobook trends are telling, to say the least

They say that "art imitates life." As Audible Editors, we say the same thing goes for audiobooks. Every year, our team reviews, debates, and reflects on the best new listens, a collaborative and comprehensive process that inevitably stirs up new insights into the themes, aesthetics, and even performance techniques that are resonating most with listeners today. Breaking down the top trends that bubbled up in the audio landscape offers a fascinating look into where our heads, hearts, and headphones were at this year—and where we might be going in 2026.

Alternative realities

With so much of 2025 feeling like a fever dream, we didn’t really need science fiction to help us imagine dystopian landscapes. Still, it was nice to be transported somewhere else with the help of these eerily relatable explorations of “our simulated world.”

A deep dive into Black aesthetics

The strategic aesthetics used throughout Black history received overdue recognition this year. After Imani Perry permanently altered our understanding of the importance of the color blue, it was impossible to overlook the midnight runway replacing the traditional red carpet at this year's Met Gala—the theme of which was inspired by Monica L. Miller's 2009 book, newly released in audio.

A century of Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal classic celebrated its 100th anniversary on April 10, while a slew of authors and academics proved all year long that the novel remains as relevant and resonant today as ever, even inspiring the title of one of the year’s most explosive memoirs.

Corporate satire

With more employees returning to offices full-time after years of working remotely, the need to blow off steam over the pettiness of corporate politics came across loud and clear in the commercial fiction landscape.

Duet narrations

Nowhere is the evolution of audio storytelling felt more strongly than among romance listeners. Today, a clear demand for duet performances (in which two narrators read the main characters’ voices throughout the story, often alternating during dialogue) continues to shape the genre, with several series re-recordings slated for 2026 releases.

Dual authors

With several of our favorite 2025 releases resulting from collaborations between some of the biggest names in film, fiction, podcasting, and journalism, this year proved that two minds often are better than one.

All the lonely people

Next time you feel lonely, remember, you are far from alone in experiencing those emotions. In fact, loneliness remains one of the trendiest topics for these isolating times. (All the more reason to bask in the company of another human voice on recording!)

Masculinity, reexamined

Speaking of the loneliness epidemic, it's been highlighted as a particularly acute problem for men right now, and masculinity sure has given us a lot to talk about (including these inspiring chats with Jacob Tobia and Scott Galloway). To all the “performative men” out there populating public spaces with their deep love of literature, these listening recommendations are for you.

Menopauseit's all the rage!

On the other hand, more women warmed up to the idea of speaking openly about “the change” this year, making menopause a hotter topic than ever.

Let the games begin

This year left no question that reality television translates into fantastic fiction, full of high-stakes drama and extreme chaos.

And then there were nuns

From Rosie O’Donnell’s role on the Sex and the City reboot to the religious imagery running through Rosalía's hit pop album, several sacred sisterhoods shared time in the spotlight this year, starring in an assortment of audiobooks that were nothing short of heaven-sent.

What's love got to do with it?

Plus, with celibacy sounding more appealing than ever before, it's evident our expectations for modern romance have rapidly evolved, leading to a rising popularity in lavender marriages, polyamorous relationships, and other nontraditional nuptials.

Tons of tradwives

That being said, tradwives are clearly also thriving in today's cultural climate, for better or for worse.

Retro cinema

Nostalgia proved to be a major motivating factor among cinephiles and audiophiles alike this year, as fans celebrated major milestones for several classic films, including the 50th anniversary of Jaws, the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future, and, most shocking of all, the 20th anniversary of Twilight.

The recording booth became the "new Hollywood"

Meanwhile, audiobooks got even more cinematic this year, from film stars re-recording the books behind their big-screen adaptations to immersive full-cast productions bringing franchises to life like never before.

Titles that say a mouthful

Momentous times call for momentous book titles, if the trend toward long-named, ominous-sounding nonfiction is any indication.

How does this all make you feel?

With more and more individuals misusing “therapy speak” terms on social media, there were certain catchphrases that seemed to be everywhere this year, including on the covers of audiobooks—and to paraphrase Lucinda Berry, they're a safe space for that.
