There, ambition and competition threaten to rupture their friendship, while strong and unspoken forces pull them together over the years. Whereas Maria finds early success in New York City as an artist, Ruth stumbles along the fringes of the art world, pulled toward a quieter life of work and marriage. As their lives converge and diverge, they meet in one final and fateful confrontation.

Ruth and Maria's decades-long friendship interrogates the nature of intimacy, desire, class and time. What does it mean to be an artist and to be true to oneself? What does it mean to give up on an obsession? Beautifully Written

Captivating prose. Coming of age story told in retrospect so everything feels less dramatic than actually living through it. A story about friendship, devotion and finding one’s self. Tests your ability to be patient and empathetic with characters that fumble and stumble through life. We all make mistakes, right? I was spellbound.

Is it a profile of nihilism in the 90s?

Yes — in many ways Lonely Crowds reads like a profile of discontent, of existential searching, disappointment, longing: things often associated with a “nihilistic mood.” It depicts characters who feel that many traditional or expected sources of meaning (family, success, friendship) are partial, failing, or insufficient. The 1990s art world and outsider status amplify that: ambition without guarantee, identity in flux, isolation even in a crowd.

But it stops short of full-blown nihilism: there’s still striving, still value (personal, emotional, aesthetic), still the possibility of connection (even if imperfect), still hope (or at least the fashioning of hope), even if it’s uneasy.

Slow moving for me.

The story moved slowly. I just didnt get into it very much. It’s a new genre for me.

Boring. Let Down

Suggested for book club. Nothing happens. Each time you think something is going to happen for Ruth you realize she has just wasted her entire life obsessed with her childhood friend and she cannot move on. Ruth is a depressing character who does not seem to be able to recognize her own positive qualities. I kept waiting to hear about what her art was, how she grew as an artist, but it would end up back on her obsession with Maria. Just such a letdown.
