Raised in a large, poor English-Irish family, she learned early that life is rarely tidy, fair, or easily repaired. Her work carries traces of hardship, survival, dark humor, aging, loneliness, oddity, and the sometimes uncomfortable truths people prefer not to speak aloud. Her more than 50 books in different genres- both fiction and non fiction-build bridges between whimsy and reality, where magic exists beside grief, where old people still dream, where wounded souls keep searching, and where humor sometimes arrives wearing muddy boots instead of polished shoes.
