Juliet Butler was born in 1959 in the UK. She studied Russian at University and went to Moscow in 1982 to work as a nanny in the British Embassy, but after falling in love with a Russian citizen, stayed in Russia for the next twenty years, working as a free lance journalist. During that time she met rare conjoined twins, Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova and remained good friends with them until their deaths, aged 53 in 2003. She wrote 'The Less You Know The Sounder You Sleep' as a tribute to Dasha - the sister without a voice - who was one half of a complicated but fascinating sibling relationship.
