I am a PhD, licensed clinical social worker, professor Emerita at Fordham University, and researcher. My work focuses on the stress that mothers and fathers experience when their adult children have serious mental illness and/or substance use disorder.

I conducted a multi-year research project with 50 older women who were providing support to their adult children who were unable to remain self-supporting due to their illnesses. Each woman was over sixty years old when her life was drastically altered by becoming the default safety net for her adult “kid (s)”. I discovered that mothers experienced their adult children’s behavior as “difficult” when they find themselves, once again, having to prioritize their children’s needs over their own and saw no “exit” for themselves or their adult children from their problems.

I offer 10-week support groups (on line) for mothers (and fathers, separately) with difficult adult children. The groups provide support for parents who feel alone and often live in shame and secrecy, hiding the strain they face as they cope with their adult children's problems. The groups allow the parents to realize that they are not alone and learn from people like themselves ways to cope with their adult children's situation, while also beginning to take better care of themselves.
