Hans Greimel is an award-winning American business journalist who covers Japanese, Korean and other Asian automakers from Tokyo as the Asia Editor at Automotive News. Greimel has written about Nissan for more than a decade and interviewed Carlos Ghosn multiple times over that period. Greimel also flew to Beirut, Lebanon, in January 2020 to attend Ghosn’s first press conference after his stunning escape from Japan. Greimel’s coverage of the Ghosn scandal for Automotive News won the national 2019 Folio Eddie Award in the category of Best Series of Articles. As an international reporter, Greimel has reported from 19 countries on four continents. Prior to joining Automotive News in 2007, Greimel was a foreign correspondent with The Associated Press, with postings in Japan, South Korea and Germany. Greimel’s prize-worthy work includes his coverage of the arrest of Carlos Ghosn, the rise of China’s auto industry, the leadership style of Toyota President Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s unintended acceleration crisis, the 2011 earthquake-tsunami in Japan and a groundbreaking expose that documented rampant price fixing among Japanese auto parts suppliers. Born near Detroit, Michigan, Greimel has a bachelor’s degree in political science and philosophy from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in international affairs from Columbia University in New York. Greimel’s views on the global automotive industry are often sought as expert outside commentary in interviews, both in English and Japanese, for such international broadcasters as BBC, ABC, Bloomberg TV, TV Tokyo, Al Jazeera and Reuters TV, as well as the Japanese networks NHK and TBS. Greimel has been a part-time instructor at Waseda University's Graduate School of Journalism since 2009. Detroit-based Automotive News was founded in 1925.
