Unlike the people in my novels, I have never been a serving police officer or gone on hunger strike in prison, never thrown a Molotov cocktail, never offed my other half (or had him committed to an asylum) but I've had a lot of fun imagining the kind of women who might do these things. My characters fight back against life's disappointments, injustice, misogyny, unhappy families, love gone wrong. My most recent novel, What Doesn't Kill Us, inspired by real events in the 1970s, was named Scottish Fiction Book of the Year (2024). Set against the disturbing backdrop of the Yorkshire Ripper's murder spree, it follows a group of militant young women living without men in a shared house in Leeds. Val McDermid described it as 'vivid and visceral.' I began my working life as a journalist, covering major news stories and winning several awards before I turned to writing fiction and drama. Three of my seven published novels have been listed for prestigious national prizes. I tend to set my books in Yorkshire, where I grew up, or Scotland, which has been my home since 1988. Weekends are spent avoiding housework, eating and drinking with friends, and walking the Fife coast with my partner Jim.
