Lew Griffin is a survivor, a black man in New Orleans, a detective, a teacher, a writer. Having spent years finding others, he has lost his son - and himself - in the process. Now, a derelict has appeared in a New Orleans hospital claiming to be Lewis Griffin and displaying a copy of one of Lew's novels. It is the beginning of a quest that will take Griffin into his own past while he tries to deal in the present with a search for three missing young men.

He thinks if he doesn't speak, doesn't think about what happened, somehow things will be all right.

Lorelai spent the last seven years enjoying the time with her young charge Amelia Rose. Tutoring the daughter of a wealthy business owner added perks to the job, like holidays around the world. In all these years, Lorelai had never once seen the downside to having big money, until the holiday in Thailand where Amelia Rose is targeted, and they were both kidnapped.

I was the golden child. The one all the Cerberus guys looked up to. I was on my way to becoming the next career Marine. But after my last deployment to Syria, being a Marine was no longer an option.
