Life as a raider in the Wastes, where monsters roam and the military lurks, is as easy as it sounds.

I’ve been out here for a long time, and the fear that courses through my blood every time I step outside our camp walls to scavenge never fades. No matter how many monsters you face—and have to run for your life from—it doesn’t ever get easier.

But when I come across a bound and injured monster in an abandoned military base, I can’t leave him behind. His presence in our camp is causing tension, but I can’t bring myself to care when I get to see a different side to him—when he starts to show me who he is beneath the pain and lingering trauma.

Despite his gentle nature, I soon discover why others are so desperate to own him; why the military, and now this stranger lurking outside our camp, want to put him back in chains and take him away from me.

Something is hiding under his skin, something that threatens to upend my entire life.

There’s a reason why all other monsters fear him.

The Rycke contains explicit sexual content, graphic depictions of torture and violence, and deals with PTSD. It is book three in the Monstrous series, a post-apocalyptic m/m fantasy series that features monsters and human men falling in love. It is best to listen to the series in order.

As much as it pains me to say, I think I love this book more than the Soul Eater… but it is so close… let’s call it a tie.

A wonderful story that just gets better and better!

Perfect!

I love Aury and Ghost--they are both such sweethearts! Michael Lesley did another amazing job bringing this world to life, and I can't wait to hear more in the series!

Loved It!

I appreciate the little moments of domestication, but I wish it would’ve been more dark and dramatic given the nature of the monster. Overall the performance is fine put I did laugh every time Ghost stuttered.

Cute

This is my fav of the series (so far) and I just cannot express how much I resonated with Ghost ugh 😍 and Aury is literally everything. I love them.

WOW 😍

If you’ve read the first two this one is just as good. Lily Mayne is an excellent world builder and the story is surprisingly sweet, spicy and exciting as usual.

Love this series.

Storytelling

This entire series is extraordinary in its world-building, well-drawn and complicated characters, and amazing and passion-filled love stories. I can pretty much say that each book so far is among my favorites in my nearly 700 audio-book collection. Of the entire series, I have developed the most compassion for two of the characters: Aury (the Rycke), and Seraph (book 6). Of all of the monsters, I think Aury is the "gentlest," even though he is also potentially the most dangerous. He and Ghost together are seriously lovable.

Every single one of the characters throughout the series is voiced and acted out by one of the most talented voice actors I've ever listened to. I mean, Michael Lesley is TRULY GIFTED and was the perfect voice actor for this series.

The sweetest monster you'll ever love

The book appears to be very good, but I am struggling with it: the narrator (who did a fantastic job with the first installment of the series and performed very well in the second part) completely failed to match the voices to the characters in this book, nor did he handle the reading of many scenes effectively. Both characters have high-pitched voices, Ghost's voice being one of a funny teenager and The Rycke... I don't even know how to describe that voice, but it was truly a very poor choice. It had a high, stifled, and tiresome tone :(. The intimate bedroom scenes, which according to the description in the book and language of the scenes themselves were supposed to be sensual and masculine, are narrated with a wide smile of someone looking at cute little puppies. Mood killer? Yes.

I must emphasize that I greatly enjoyed the narration in the previous volumes (and Soul Reaper's voice is pure mastery). Perhaps Michael Lesley ran out of ideas for this book?

Wrong character voices in an otherwise good story
