Claire Parks has been very sick, but she's fine now - just fine - and ready to paint the town red. Well, pink. On her first excursion into the wild world of dating, she nets Bud, a tall, sexy, good-looking lumberjack. She won him fair and square, her prize for not dying. But after a weekend of wild sex, she discovers he's not what she thinks he is.
Undercover police officer Lieutenant Tyler "Bud" Morrison can't believe his eyes. What's a 'princess' doing in a dance club known for its rough trade? She needs rescuing, and rescuing women is what Bud does best. He saw Claire first - finders keepers. After a weekend of the hottest sex he's ever had, he's definitely keeping this one. When trouble comes her way, he pulls out all the stops to protect her. Except Claire doesn't want Bud at her back. She wants him in her bed.

What's sexier than a thick, hunky lumberjack? What about a thick, hunky undercover cop pretending to be a lumberjack? In Midnight Run Lisa Marie Rice indulges this steamy fantasy for us by describing Claire Parks' (a shy virgin!) tumultuous relationship with Lieutenant Tyler "Bud" Morrison. Alexandra R. Joseph's performance is sensual and arousing. Her presentation of sex scenes has all of the warmth and care of "Bud" himself. Joseph is also able to capture Claire Park's sharp intelligence and wry observations.
This was a pretty good story. I liked both Claire and Bud and although I had my frustrations with them both, I was happy to see them together in the end.
Claire Parks is an heiress and has led a very tough but sheltered life. She was born to older parents that coddled and loved her and with her health being delicate, Claire wasn't allowed out much. Once she hit 13 they found out she had leukemia. It took years of treatment after treatment but she pulled through them all even when everyone was convinced that she was one step away from death. Claire has been sickness free for 5 years and is ready to live her life. She got her own house and a new job and decides to go out to a bar with a new friend to have some fun. Unfortunately her friend isn't very reliable and leaves her stuck at the bar with no ride and men that wont take no for an answer.
Tyler Morrison (aka Bud) is a police officer and didn't have an easy childhood. He was a victim of a bad home life as a kid but raised himself above that to become a soldier in the Army and then a respected officer of the law. Bud has never found a woman that's touched him (emotionally) and is kind of a man-whore when he meets Claire. He sees her as a princess and not his normal type...but yet he can't seem to get the rest of his body to go along with what his brain tells him and he stays where normally he'd go.
Claire is at a club and has been ditched by her friend when she meets Bud. A jerk isn't taking Claire's no for an answer when Bud (who is there undercover) comes over to help her. Realizing she's stuck there with no ride, Bud proceeds to take her home. He doesn't intend to take things any further but can't resist when she asks him in for a drink once they get to her place. Once he does take her up on her invite, Bud keeps encountering things that should make him run but he can't make himself go. Bud and Claire end up having a wonderful (and sex filled) weekend together before real life comes calling. Before this happens, Claire and Bud have completely fallen for each other (yes, it's kind of an insta-love situation). Real life shows up in the form of her father, which also makes Bud realize who he's involved with (he didn't realize just who Claire was as far as her family's money and position in the city goes).
Bud ends up at dinner with Claire and her father and is worried that her father will try to chase him off as not good enough for his daughter. I liked the way Bud handled her father and made himself clear on his intentions towards Claire. Things turn out pretty well with the discussion with Claire's father but unfortunately, when Bud finds out about how sick she used to be he becomes more a nanny than a lover. Claire is completely gone on Bud but isn't very happy when he starts coddling her (and I can completely understand her frustration...I think I would have punched Bud in the "sneeze" situation). One of the reasons she moved out on her own was because he father never stopped coddling her and now Bud wont stop either. The main problem is that Bud doesn't listen very well and Claire's not very good at being confrontational. When things finally come to a head and Claire's had it, she breaks things off with Bud in anger and Bud doesn't do very well at listening. They both make errors in their actions and end up alone and miserable because of it. Fortunately, friends that are worried about them arrange things to make them cross paths which might not have done the trick but some drama pops up just about that time and the danger causes a reassessment of priorities. In the end, Bud and Claire are together and while they need to talk some stuff out, they're ready to start their HEA.
This was an enjoyable story. I liked both Claire and Bud and was happy to see them work things out. My only wish was that the story would have maybe included them talking things out in the end. You know they'll work things out and they wont let things split them up again but you don't get to see it which I found a little frustrating. Still, overall I really liked the story and plan to read book #3. I'd recommend this book. :)
Pretty good addition to the series. :D

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was exciting.Any additional comments?
This was a good story for a romance. Predictable in places and alittle overdone on the sex scenes. I felt like the female character, Claire, was a little annoying at times as she was over reacting to situations in the book... It is a typical storyline but not hideous.Good Story.

This was a silly, weekend 'deal' of unrelenting sex between experienced man and innocent woman. I'm not sure why this was in the 'Thrill/Mystery' section as it so clearly 'Romance/Erotica'.If you want a story with your smut you'll want to pass. There are a lot of hot romances WITH great thrills and mystery out there. This was rather juvenile.
If you are a fan of pure lust/pleasure than you may like it.
As the 2nd in a 3 part series I'm waiting for #3 to buy on sale.

Midnight Man was an all-around good listen. The narration was well done and the plot was exciting and enticing. I liked how well-rounded each of the characters were and how Rice seemed to make this book sexy and carnal while also bringing some modern femininity to her females characters and protective dominance to her males. In a round about way (whether intentionally or unintentionally), Rice addresses the need women have to be both independent and self-sufficient, but also protected and cherished. This is an age-old emotional need which is why we are so complex -- haha!Be prepared to commit to the series (3 books so far) because Rice ends each book rather abruptly, but addresses the hanging ends in the next....
