Riley Morgan desperately needs a reset on his life. Pit fights with aliens and illegal salvage jobs are barely enough to get by—until a salvage op turns up a beautiful stranger in a stasis pod and a clear case of kidnapping. Helping her means throwing away what’s left of his life. The trouble only gets deeper when the stranger turns out to be a wildly illegal artificial intelligence built for assassination.

Like Riley, Selene has been used and abused by her bosses… and like Riley, she longs for a life of her own choosing. Riley and Selene are ready for the struggle ahead. They aren’t ready for the dangerous and sexy aliens in their way, or the glitzy parties and corporate conspiracies, and they certainly aren’t ready for the spark between one another.

I am a huge fan of Elliot Kay! He is one of the most intelligent Authors, and his books are amazing. Natural Consequences and Poor Man's Fight book series are in my top 4 book series of all time. in addition, this books writing is equally intellectual and thought provoking.

Unfortunately, as Kyle is developing a truly wonderful relationship with Selena, I cringed as he tries to develop an equally loving relationship with another. Open relationships, and polyamory are great, fun, and exciting. However, with this series Kyle and Selena are pursuing loving relationships outside of the one they have with one another.

I felt sad and cringe about the entire situation.

That being said, Elliott Kay is the best. I just had a hard time with this one.

To much to unpack, read my review.

Hot Restart is a stand-alone novel which paints a universe so rich it feels like it must be from a series. Pay attention to the initial chapter Warning which notes explicit sex and murder alongside "relationship boundary conversation during combat." The rest of the book delivers all of that. Tess Irondale's almost purring voice for the narrator sets the tone perfectly and really set up the explicit scenes to fully draw you in. Each of the characters has their own voice and point of view both in how they are written and how they are performed. On re-listening, the visuals were so vivid that I sat up to look at my phone because I was looking forward to seeing a scene again, only to remember that the visuals are virtual.

I love science fiction and how it uses a speculative premise to explore ideas. Too often science fiction feels dated because the future and the technologies it explores seem to be the same ones from the cold war era. The ideas and technology here are some making headlines today.

The setting is populated with a good variety of sentient races which are much more varied than the standard human shaped with bumps and spots added. Variation is not just in physicality, but also in temperament and values. The book could well be the beginning of a series, but it is a standalone science fiction book wonderfully complete in itself, but with a rich enough universe I can imagine countless stories in it, both with its main characters, or with others. Delightfully it is complete in itself.

The reader gets to know the characters through their actions and words. Details about how this universe works are woven in seamlessly so it doesn't feel like cabbage heading. Characters talk to each other a lot and develop throughout the book. A nice touch is how empaths are used in world. Never has consent been so easily clear and hot.

I am finding that it bears up to multiple listens. I cared so deeply about the characters by the end it was almost jarring to realize they are complete unknowns at the start. I found it hilarious the first time, but on the second time through knowing the characters made it funnier.

Sexy, funny, action-packed, did I say sexy?

This book is quality stuff. it's funny, hot interesting, engaging and compelling. if you tend to put yourself in the position of the characters it is very enjoyable.

well written polyamory and well thought out alien cultures

The characters and story deserves a second book to make a great series. Maybe even meet up with those merc women.

I think this deserves at least a second book

It's clear that this book was an attempt by the author to re-create the success of his (genuinely great for the first few books) Good Intentions series. In those books, archetypes for good an evil get involved with a young man, as the driver for a modern, harem romance with a nice guy hero.

Unfortunately, this book is unable to match that success (despite the awesome-as-always Tess Irondale's narration) for one simple reason: By choosing an AI driven automaton as the female lead, any possibility of engagement is impossible. "She" almost by definition must be either acting out trained characteristics designed to convince a male to develop an emotional attachment (a la the "Ex Machina" movie) or, even worse, is simply mimicking approximations of emotion based on a generative algorithm with feedback. On any given interaction, this could lead to anything from an "uncanny" response to a decision to kill the MC, but regardless, you certainly can't believe anything "she" says.

Separate from that, the sci-fi universe doesn't work as well as a backdrop for the action since it removes the contrast between the normalcy of the setting and the unnatural aspects of the relationships.

AI == no engagement

This was a fun engaging story with possibilities for return. And Tess Irondale’s narration is excellent. Hot Restart has some of the fun elements from both the Good Intentions and Poor Man’s Fight series, but is very much its own wonderful ride. If you’re already a fan of Mr. Kay’s work, you will thoroughly enjoy this. If you’re unfamiliar, this is a great place to start.

Elliot Kay, Tess Irondale, and spicy adventure.
