I thought this 5th book in the series made up for the previous book which was not my favorite. This one kept me intrigued and I was happy with how things progressed and ended. The only thing I would say is we didnt get a ton of cameos in this one, I missed the other group members and their significant others, it would have been nice to have them appear more like we got in the other stories in this interconnected series.

I thought this one started out with a bang, getting to see what Winnie went through as a kid, seeing her babysitter murdered by her younger brother, Cass. They reunite later on when Winnie has done something people are worried about her (I won't give it away but its a good addition to this complicated story) and we get some glimpses of both of their darkness but also their vulnerable and caring side. Many years later Cass makes a reappearance and can't stay away from Winnie. Other bad things start happening and Winnie thinks it's Cass but he slowly convinces her and proves he wasn't involved.

It's a mysterious who is terrorizing Winnie and making bad things happen in their hometown. I did grow suspicious of the character but I didnt realize how loony/obsessive they were until the very end haha. Author did a good job keeping the listener/reader on their toes. I felt bad for the girl at the end as well, she must have been pretty traumatized with everything that went down.

I thought the steam in this one was fabulous, it was a good mix with the plot and engaging storyline. I liked the dynamics they had going, a lot of push and pull. Cass showed his dominance but Winnie didnt back down either hahaha but she had fun when she was being a brat and Cass had to help keep her on the right track ;) I liked how Cass loved her for so long, wanted to protect her when he was able to, was gonna take out her tormentor but someone got to him first. His obsession was creepy for me, even his stalking haha. I might be desensitized but this one was not black black on the scale of dark romances. Cass had a lot of redeeming qualities and I enjoyed his relationship he helped bring back to life with Winnie. The steam was *chefs kiss* and happy it didnt overwhelm the story like it could have easily.

Narration was good in this one, I felt the emotion but also the detachment Winnie experienced with her trauma and talking about her past. I felt the ups and downs, the fears, the elation when she learned what Cass had done and why and seeing his walls come down as well. I haven't listened to her before but I have a ton in my library so I will definitely be listening to her more in the future.

Another dark, spicy and hot ready from aj! I seriously love this series! And I’m totally obsessed with these serial killers! Definitely recommend!

This may be my favorite Pleasure and Prey story yet. I couldn't get enough of the characters, the story and the spice; everything was exactly what I was hoping for when starting this book. The beginning was wild, and quite frankly, it didn't get much tamer.

Cassian was about as unhinged as it gets, but I loved how obsessed with Winnie he was. His love for her literally knew ZERO bounds. That man would burn the world for her without a second thought. I adored him. Her past was dark and sad, but I loved her strength and how wonderful she was despite that past. I just really enjoyed these two.

The audio was great. Marie Hawkins was fantastic once again and I loved this listen. Thank you so much to Pink Flamingo Productions for the advanced copy!

Heartless by AJ Merlin is a contemporary dark romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Marie Hawkins. This is the fifth book in the Pleasure and Prey series and can be read as standalone.

AJ does an amazing job pulling me into her stories that I can't help but binge them in one sitting. I loved the chemistry between Cassian and Winnie.

I can't wait for the next book in the series Hated to be released on January 30, 2026.

Marie did an amazing job on the narration. She really knows how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of her work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for a dark romance, serial killer romance, stalker romance, or romantic suspense.

Heartless is the 5th book in the Pleasure and Prey series. This is Cassian (Cass) and Winnifred (Winnie)'s story. This book is told from Winnie's point of view.

When Winnie is young she sees Cass do something to his older sister. Now years later, things keep happening to other people close to Winnie and Cass is back in town.

Cass keeps showing up in Winnie's life. She knows he's dangerous, but has always had feelings for him. Can Cass and Winnie get through everything that is thrown at them in this book? Can Winnie figure out who is after all those close to her? Will Winnie get her happy ending after everything?

I enjoyed this book, as well as the rest in the series. I'm excited to see what happens next in this series!
