ABOUT OUR HARLEM:

Through this culinary adventure, award-winning chef and restauranteur Marcus Samuelsson takes listeners on a music and food-filled journey to his Harlem neighborhood and Red Rooster Harlem restaurant. The seven-hour Audible Original will be organized by days of the week, filled with the sounds of Marcus’s kitchen, gospel and jazz from local bands, and conversation with friends. Each day, a different guest cooks with Marcus and he invites the listener to cook along with them, listen to the beats that flow through his restaurant, and learn about Harlem’s rich history, diversity, and vibrant pulse. Our Harlem teaches about the Great Migration from the south that brought Mac & Greens to Harlem and rent parties that helped residents eke out a living and inspired Marcus when he and his co-owner Andrew Chapman opened Ginny’s Supper Club in the basement of the Rooster – where everyone from Roberta Flack to Alicia Keys has come to jam. Listeners will meet lively characters from places like the Apollo Theater, Charles’ Country Pan Fried Chicken, and La Marqueta, the Spanish Harlem Market where Marcus shops.
