High Stakes. Edge-of-your-seat suspense. A nail-biting conclusion. Audible listeners are no strangers to a gripping narrative. But this spring, they found an incredible true-life drama to follow in a thoroughbred racehorse named Audible.

The equine superstar’s name was a fortunate coincidence—his owners actually named him after an “audible” play in football. As he started to make a name for himself on the racing circuit, Audible came on board as his official sponsor, and Audible listeners worldwide rallied around his success and followed his journey all the way to the finish line at the Kentucky Derby.

When Audible (the horse) won the Florida Derby, a key qualifying race for the Kentucky Derby, Audible (the audio entertainment company) celebrated by donating $15,000 in his name to the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, an organization that works to retrain and rehome horses who have retired from the racing world.

As the Kentucky Derby approached, buzz around the horse named Audible grew from a gentle canter to a deafening gallop. Fans around the world cheered him on with the hashtag #GoAudible. To make it easier for everyone to join the fun, Audible created a special site page with live updates on the horse’s progress, plus a collection of titles on all topics equestrian and a fun “Audible book or racehorse?” quiz that tested visitors’ knowledge with categories like “Big Magic” and “Noble Indy.” Audible (the one without hooves) also gave a gift to everyone who followed along in the form of a free download of American Pharoah, Joe Drape’s acclaimed non-fiction Audible book about the 2015 Triple Crown winner.

The day of the race, Audible ran as fast as he could and ultimately finished a strong third. He may not have taken the title, but he won a triple crown’s worth of love from racing and audiobook fans around the world.
