If you are a fan of the grimdark genre in general and especially if you're a fan of Warhammer Fantas..Show More »y then you should hear this book. The narrator is magnificent, nothing less; I think this might be the best reading I have ever heard.
This book is all the things you could hope for in a late medieval grimdark fantasy. Courage and cowardice, beauty and ugliness, salvation and injustice, delicacy and gore, profanity and eloquence, redemption and regret, romance and vulgarity, nobles and knaves, mystery and action, horror and humor. This book does a lot of things and generally it does them almost absurdly well, all of them.
This book is so atmospheric, witty and moody that it could probably have gotten away with having no story at all. Rest assured that it does have a really good story though, several of them in fact. You jump from character to character as seen in many other books but it's somehow not annoying at all in this book; there simply aren't any boring characters or story lines, so you never find yourself "waiting" to get back to one of the interesting ones (I'm looking at you George R. R. Martin and J. R. R. Tolkien!).
Some good books are difficult to follow by listening, this good book is very easy to listen to. The chapters are short (but not too short) and the writing comes close to being perfect for listening.
I strongly recommend this book for any non-squeamish fans of medieval fantasy.
