Publisher's summary

The RiftWar is done. But a fearsome army of trolls and renegade humans, emboldened by the drug of destruction, has risen in strength from the ashes of defeat. There is one, however, who defies the call to battle....

New York Times best-selling fantasist Raymond E. Feist returns to a beleaguered realm of wonders and magic - where war is an enduring legacy; where blood swells the rivers and nourishes the land. Attend to this hitherto untold chapter in the violent history of Midkemia - a towering saga of great conflicts, brave acts, and insidious intrigues. It is the story of a traitor who rejects the brutality of his warlike kind and casts his lot with the human targets of their fierce aggression. It tells of mysterious deaths and sinister machinations - and signs of a time when the fate of many civilizations rested in the able, unfaltering hands of RiftWar veterans Squire Locklear and cunning thief-turned-squire Jimmy the Hand. It chronicles the powerful awakening of Owyn - apprentice magician of untried strengths - and celebrates the selfless achievements of Pug, the great sorcerer of two worlds. Welcome now to astonishing new corners of a world you have not yet fully explored - and prepare to experience true excitement, blood chilling terror...and the triumph born from the doom aimed at the beating heart of a kingdom.

Best so far!

Of the dozen or so books by Feist I have listened to, I would say this was the best so far; A few small mysteries running in-tandem with the main story, favorite characters returning, and even an ending which was both good and slightly sad. Looking forward to tge rest of this series.

Great Book but not so great narrator

I love the book. The story was well written. However the narrator totally butchered all the names of the characters and cities from the original rift war saga books narration.

Books in a series...

The story is fantastic... but this is book 11ish in the series. The narrator came up with his own pronunciations instead of listening to book one and keeping the continuity.

Good listen.

The only parts, I really found conflict with, was the fact that the reader of the saga did not pronounce the names, and places correctly. Example, Aruta, Not Arutha; And some of the names of the places I was guessing at the proper names, stated from the rift wars saga.

Love Feists books

Love the books and love the narrators voice. Only thing that throws me off is the narrators pronunciation of names and places.

A hint of what could be when we all learn to live and respect one another.

Pronunciation is important

This is a good book from one of the best fantasy series available. Unfortunately the narrator mispronounced most of the names and locations in this book. It was very distracting and detracted from the immersion in the story which is actually very interesting. Disappointing is a good single word summary of the performance...

love the story but

I've reread the series a few times, but every time he pronounces the prince's name as Aru-ta it's like nails on a chalk board. not going to listen to the rest, I'll stick to reading them.

Based on a video-game, fyi

This book is counterpart to an old PC game (Betrayal at Krondor) based off of the original 4 books. I'm not certain, but I think the game was made and then the book was written as an enhancement to the story. It's an extremely dated game, but a solid classic RPG, if you can get over the age. It's very much written like a video-game, jumping from quest-giver to quest-giver but it has a certain quality and depth compared to similarly styled works.('The Madalorian' for example)

Peter Joyce is fantastic! I don't care about his pronunciations, regardless of how I originally read the names. I just assume they are old-english pronunciations that I was unaware of when I first read these books. It adds to the world-building in my opinion. Not to mention the overall quality of his voice ages up for it - I have no idea what Mr. Joyce looks like, but he sounds like he's about 8 feet tall with a personality larger than life!
