Funny, but many of the characters seemed familiar to me. I found a bio on her and found that she grew up near Lassen Park where I volunteered! The book not only brought back happy memories but also entertained me thoroughly.

There were times I could almost smell the smoke. Her ability to take you into the daily life of National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon sets her books apart from other mysteries. I enjoy reading about the beautiful yet perilous settings as well as the inner workings of the Park Service in all of her books. Barbara Rosenblat does a great job as narrator.

Really good writing on the critical scenes where she is attacked ( I don’t think that is giving much away). Anna is an intriguing character and she has a lot to learn as a manager which is very entertaining.

The down side is that I did not really feel convinced by the motive of the villain and the final resolution of the plot but I enjoyed the journey and didn’t feel to let down by the weakish ending on the whodunit front because Anna’s personal story is more interesting and leads somewhere more credible.

I am looking forward to the next one but how I wish Audible made the sequence of a series a bit clearer.

I like the Anna Pigeon/Nevada Barr novels, and I've read and/or listened to many of them. I like the mystery combined with Anna's middle aged woman's ..Show More »angst about life and her complex feelings toward others. It is a good study of humanity.

A minor nit is the anti-hunting bias which is evident in many books in the series, but this one is a little over the top. Barr characterizes all hunters as cretins, never allowing a single ethical example to enter the story.

I wouldn't complain about the anti-hunter bias except that such an attitude is atypical of all the Park Rangers I've met, who generally understand the need for hunters and the revenue they provide for wildlife welfare.

Still, it's a good book with some great characters. It's not the best Anna Pigeon book in the series, but it is worth your time.

Nevada Barr rocks! She gets the crime elements right, has done a wonderful job of characterization in each novel (so far I've "read" four unabridged in the series), and the narrator, Ms. Rosenblatt, is to be commended for the depth and breadth of her voice. I can hardly wait for the next in the series, even though I was nearly poisoned by the adrenaline coursing through my system during the last three to four hours of this one!

With mysteries, and mysteries in a series with such tried and true (still enjoyable but nevertheless) formulas, I often find myself skimming. This is..Show More » the first Nevada Barr book I've downloaded on Audible, and I'm tempted to go back to the beginning and work my way through again, this time in audio form.

The narrator does a great job pacing and creating the moods that I often rushed through --without even realising or meaning to. When I think back on all the Pigeon mysteries, I can't really remember whodunit, but I remember the scenery and feeling of the parks. With this book and narrator, I feel everything is painted more fully in my mind and the feeling of actions is more enduring, and I was swallowed up by the story and imagery not just the compelling descriptions and love of the scenery, which previously were sufficient reason enough to grab each new book of the series.

The narrator's voice is pretty much exactly how I hear Anna's voice and speech patterns in my head, so that's always nice. ;)

Part of the charm of her books is the scenery the non-city National parks afford (her Liberty Island book had similar issues for me). My biggest issue was the change of narrator. Joyce Bean did OK, and it sounded like she had listened to Rosenblat and was imitating her style. But Rosenblat IS the voice of Anna. I can't stand it when series like this change narrator. For those of us who listen to all the books, part of the attraction to the series is Rosenblat's voice.

I am quite familiar with the Anna Pigeon series, and am an avid fan. But this one stood out among the lot. First, it is, like most, just a very well-..Show More »written book, based on a character I like, all crafted by a very talented author. Based on that alone, I would still rate this book as the best in the series. But I found something else in this book that surprised me. Without giving away the story, I must explain that early in this book, Anna experiences a woman's worst nightmare, as a captive with some seriously sexual undertones (don't worry, it is more psychological than physical.) However, the way Nevada Barr handled Anna's responses to the trauma afterward is remarkable. As a woman, I was stunned by the author's insight, and as a fortunate woman, having never experienced such trauma, I gained an insight that I would never have imagined. I came away feeling like I understood far more of the shame, confusion, and anger that comes with such an event. Moreover, I feel like I can understand more clearly why some people behave in ways that seem to be strange. Once I saw it so clearly through Anna's (Nevada Barr's) eyes, it began to make perfect sense. I also realized that I, as a woman, would get a totally different insight than a male reader, and that it might prove far more helpful to the male audience than to the female readers. I would recommend it to all, male and female, based solely on this feature, but I am quite confident that anyone and everyone will enjoy the story on its own merit. It is not until the very end that all is revealed, for throughout the story, I vacillated between my chosen villians, never quite sure. YES, this is a very good read/listen, and for several reasons. If you don't know Anna Pigeon, this is a great introduction. If you do, you'll find you never really knew her until now.
