Publisher's summary

The rugged landscape of Sequoia National Park is a challenge on the best of days - but when a park ranger discovers an abandoned exclusive campsite with an empty tent and high-end technical gear scattered on the shores of an alpine lake, the wilderness takes on a sinister new hue.

Thirty-two-year-old Felicity Harland - a former FBI agent who left the service in the wake of a personal tragedy and has taken her skills off the grid - is brought in as chief investigator. As a federal agent with the Investigative Services Bureau, she tackles crimes that occur on National Parks lands: unexplained falls, domestic disputes, and now a possible murder case.

The private company that set up the exclusive camp won’t reveal their client list, leaving Felicity with zero clues. As she struggles to find a lead, she’s also haunted by a painful past that dogs her at every step. But when she meets Ferdinand Huxley, a Navy SEAL turned park ranger, she begins to see the value in not just working with a partner but trusting one, too.

The investigation takes Felicity and Hux deep into a wilderness that tests their physical limits to the extreme - and to the mean streets of Los Angeles, where they begin to learn the grisly truth behind the campers’ disappearance....

Wonderfully gripping story.

This novel pulled me in immediately & couldn't stop listening! Narration is a bit wonky at times, but I still pushed through... glad I did, the ending was so unexpected! Enjoy!

Narration jarring

Story and setting very entertaining but narration would randomly switch tone and tempo like the main character was possessed. Hoping the next book does not have the same problem.

Amazing author, great narrator, horrible editing

First - Claire Kells is amazing. If you haven’t read Girl Underwater - get it!

I’ve been waiting excitedly for this author to publish a new book. Narrator is great - but there are areas that sound like they had someone else read a sentence and then spliced it in. It’s distracting and very obvious.

Great start to a new series!

action, celebrities, crime-thriller, dog, ex-SEAL, family-drama, family-dynamics, federal-agents, first-in-series, friends, friendship, law-enforcement, missing-persons, National Park, search-and-rescue, Sequoia, survival, survivor's guilt, suspense, theft, due diligence*****

Special Agent Felicity Harland of the Investigative Services Bureau which deals with crimes occurring on National Park lands is sent to Sequoia NP to investigate the disappearance of a celebrity and her companion. Her partner at this site is former navy SEAL and accomplished tracker Ranger Ferdinand Huxley (Hux) who is k in this wintry, large, wild park with some serious elevation challenges. With the help of Search and Rescue, complete with a dive team, the body of the celebrity is found. Now the question becomes: suicide, accident, or homicide. Excellent development of characters and story, complete with a final twist that totally blindsided me!
I bought this one after reading book two courtesy of NetGalley, and now I wait for book three!
Natalie Naudus is the narrator who is very good but has problems with her recording booth.

audio issue

Entertaining story and good narration but odd voice change periodically. Mostly with main female character but sometimes it happened to other characters. It was distracting and didn't make sense. Not sure if it was a recording issue or narration problem.

The story was amazing but the narrator was average

As someone who has backpacked most of that area of the Sierra Nevada mountains it was fun to live through it again. Some of the landmarks are a little off but the story was incredibly good in fact it was riveting. The end was somewhat of a surprise but but I especially loved that I could picture where the bad guy trekked in order to try to make his escape. I've been there, too.

I would love to read more or listen to another book by this same author about this same area of the mountains. Any of Mineral King, black rock pass, little 5 lakes, the 9 lake basin, Kern canyon.... you get the picture!

I only have one criticism. The narrator's voice kept changing.. It was as if there was a lot of stopping and starting while recording the book. I liked the narrator's voice; it just needed to be edited better.

Not Realistic

Many aspects were not well researched. Otherwise, it was a good story. I world read another in the series.

Mediocre story with dreadful narration

Why does the narration occasionally switch between narrators? Honestly couldn’t get past how annoying that was. Story-wise it’s not exactly a barn burner.

Narration issues

Story was enjoyable, narration had issues. Random sentences (often were in a different voice at a different speed than the rest of the text. It was interruptive. I enjoyed the story enough to try this author again. Fingers crossed for the next one!
