This book makes an exceptionally nice change from others in this genre, mainly because the protagonist is a strong, independent woman who actually lik..Show More »es herself, and is comfortable with her lot in life. It's very nice to read a story in which the heroine isn't complaining endlessly about her life, or gnashing her teeth over how to make some preternatural being fall in love with her.
There are a few weak points concerning the writing; another reviewer mentioned that the writer points out her own jokes fairly often, and this really IS kind of annoying. The dialogue is kind of stilted in places, and a significant portion of the book is written from the POV of her cat-spirit, which takes a bit of getting used to.
For those who are tired of the violent and/or explicit sex that's so prevalent in urban fantasy, you'll find this book a nice change.
All in all, I consider this a good, solid debut novel in the Jane Yellowrock series, and I look forward to reading more.
This is one of my favorite authors, series and narrators. I have listened to this series several times and I enjoy it more each time I listen to it. K..Show More »hristine Hvam does a fantastic job with the narration. I do love the Cherokee that is brought into the story. Hearing the language of The People, just makes the story pop off the pages for me. I do listen while I am reading along, and Khristine pauses where Faith pauses (commas etc.) I think that a lot of times, we miss things when we don't see print. HOWEVER I love my audio books and this series. Jane Yellowrock is a good person as well as a great vamp killer!! And I do love Angie-baby! She will break your heart. I just want to squeeze her but Big Cat would take my head off. These are great stories, lots of background and history (at least for me), and a very interesting take on where vamps started. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
Great to see Jane at it in another city with the same old crew, and nice to see some new characters (eg Sole). Good relationship between Jane and Eli..Show More » and the Kid. LOTS of sexual tension between Jane and Bruiser and Rick. Not enough of Beast.
