This book makes an exceptionally nice change from others in this genre, mainly because the protagonist is a strong, independent woman who actually lik..Show More »es herself, and is comfortable with her lot in life. It's very nice to read a story in which the heroine isn't complaining endlessly about her life, or gnashing her teeth over how to make some preternatural being fall in love with her.
There are a few weak points concerning the writing; another reviewer mentioned that the writer points out her own jokes fairly often, and this really IS kind of annoying. The dialogue is kind of stilted in places, and a significant portion of the book is written from the POV of her cat-spirit, which takes a bit of getting used to.
For those who are tired of the violent and/or explicit sex that's so prevalent in urban fantasy, you'll find this book a nice change.
All in all, I consider this a good, solid debut novel in the Jane Yellowrock series, and I look forward to reading more.
This is one of my favorite authors, series and narrators. I have listened to this series several times and I enjoy it more each time I listen to it. K..Show More »hristine Hvam does a fantastic job with the narration. I do love the Cherokee that is brought into the story. Hearing the language of The People, just makes the story pop off the pages for me. I do listen while I am reading along, and Khristine pauses where Faith pauses (commas etc.) I think that a lot of times, we miss things when we don't see print. HOWEVER I love my audio books and this series. Jane Yellowrock is a good person as well as a great vamp killer!! And I do love Angie-baby! She will break your heart. I just want to squeeze her but Big Cat would take my head off. These are great stories, lots of background and history (at least for me), and a very interesting take on where vamps started. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
First Thought when Finished: Mercy Blade finalized this for me: I am #TeamJane #TeamBeast ! They are too good for both guys!
Overall Thoughts: Since I am late to the game with this series, this will be more of quick points about what keeps me going and what I am over with this series. I am over both boys! Seriously, Jane/Beast is better than both of them and if she is with them for more than Smexy times then she is settling (I reserve the right to change my mind later but right now anytime it is about the relationship--I kind of tune out). The mystery and the world building were phenomenal in Mercy Blade: once again! I am not sure how Faith dreams out these tricky situations but I am so glad she does. I would totally read a thriller by her because I am sure she would write a wonderful killer. Overall, I am still in love with this series but I do see the love triangle wearing on me!
Narrated By Khristine Hvam / Length: 14 hrs and 43 mins
I may sound like a broken record but Khristine is rocking my socks off with her narration. In Mercy Blade, I have to say I was super impressed with her male voices. She nailed them!
Final Thoughts: I need to squeeze in book 4 soon :)
ABSOLUTLY!!! I HAVE ALREADY! I also recommend that they listen to the rest of the series, in order, to get the full effect. I recommend Faith Hunter b..Show More »ecause I find her books are unpredictable. You might THINK you know what is going to happen, and them WHAM, she drops a bomb on you and things aren't as they seem. She spins a fantastic story. I will take a series that I like, and read/listen to it over and over, back to back several times because nothing else appeals to me but the world that particular author traps me in. Last year I listened to both of Faith Hunter's series (both entire series) 4 or 5 times EACH. GO FAITH!!
Great story and great narration. I finished this book late at night and I was so hyped up I couldn't fall asleep. I wanted more. I have really enjoy..Show More »ed all the books in this series but I found this story more suspenseful. I loved it.
I love this series. I do not enjoy books that are basically bodice rippers with a vampire or wolf in place of the pirate or viscount. Jane Yellowroc..Show More »k's world has grit, humor and depth. This series has held my attention from book 1. Even if you don't normally read fantasy or paranormal books, if you like action and adventure with a little steam from time to time I bet you will like this series. Only one negative, the long wait for book 8 has just begun for me.
