I chose this novel, in part because I grew up in Philadelphia. The author has good ideas, his narrative skills are a bit pedestrian. But the narration..Show More » is driving me up the wall. All the characters so far are locals, yet many of them speak with a vaguely southern accent. This is Philly. People in every neighborhood have a distinctive accent, and it doesn't come from anywhere near below the Mason/Dixon line. It's making it really hard to listen to. It's like you had characters from Southie, in Boston, speaking with New Orleans drawls. Or Scottish burrs. It really detracts from the listening experience.
Nicely Drawn Characters Make for a Worthwhile Read
This book starts off with a "bang" and picks up momentum. By the time it's over you stop and ask yourself, "did all that really happen in one day?" ..Show More »Indeed. The good thing about this book is that there are interesting characters and for a while, you're invested in their well being. Unfortunately, the ending is not fulfilling. The book jumps the shark, and a great set-up ends disappointingly.
