I'm a Michael Connelly fan so I couldn't wait to listen to these first Bosch novels recently added to the Audible Library.

This one is good, but definitely not as good as the first.

Like the first novel, there were a lot of complexities in this story, and Connelly somehow managed to tie them up nicely.

But this story simply didn't grab me like the first book and other Bosch novels.

I would rank this one in the bottom half of Connelly novels I've listened to, but the below average Connelly novel is still above average compared to other offerings.

The story is still "can't put down" at times - and a recommended listen.

I've listened to several Michael Connelly audiobooks, and love the Harry Bosch series. I was excited to see several more recently become available on ..Show More »Audible.
The Concrete Blonde is my current favorite Bosch book, topping my previous favorite: Echo Park.
It's an outstanding mix of courtroom thriller and serial killer hunt/police procedural. It moves along quickly, even the courtroom scenes are fast paced.
Characters are very well developed, not just Bosch, but all the supporting characters, and I like the plot: Bosch is sued for unlawful killing of a serial killer suspect, while at the same time a copycat killer is out there and more bodies begin to show up.
Just when you think you have it all figured out, there will be a couple twists at the end to keep you guessing. An excellent whodunnit. I highly recommend this book, even if it is your first Harry Bosch mystery.

I have read 12 of the books in the Bosch series and have read them in a random order. Wherever you are in your travels through Bosch's life, this book will fit.

The book is fast paced with lots of plot twists and turns, mobsters and cops gone bad. Bosch builds and strengthens his relationship with Jerry and Kiz, his two recurring partners, bonds with Grace Billet his supervisor, and gets married to his early flame Eleanor Wish. Along the way, Harry solves the crime and helps the FBI solve theirs. A great way to spend 13 hours.

Definitely a book that deserves to be called a page turner.

If you're looking to be entertained, or to pass the time in an enjoyable manner, try this book. It's not at the tip top of the line, but it holds its..Show More » own. The development of the main character was essential to the success of this story, and it is done well. He is charismatic and the reader learns a lot about him by the end of the book, coming to really like and respect him.

I read other reviews before buying this book and was looking out for the out-of-place relationship with the rookie cop that so many mentioned. I, however, found that relationship to be completely necessary to the story. It kept the narrative from constantly revolving around the murder, which would quickly have gotten dull. It added another dimension to the main character, taking away the tough cop facade and showing us the human beneath. I think it was these parts of the story that really caused me to like the guy.

Overall, I liked this book. It was not one that marked me; I probably won't remember it in 2 years. But it kept my mind happily occupied from the time I went in until the time I came out. That's what matters, and I recommend it to anybody who likes a good read.

I've read other Harry Bosch mysteries by Michael Connelly and always walked away with an unsatisfied feeling. This time he did it right! For those of ..Show More »you old enough to remember some of the detective novels of the fifties this one encompasses some of the best features of that genre. Don't get me wrong, the story is as up to date and timely as it gets. Al Qaeda operatives and 9/11 are never far from our minds. This novel however takes more twists and turns than a roller coaster. Bosch is a human being, capable of errors and hesitations, but always focused on his main objective, solving the murder. The plot keeps you in constant suspense, almost wanting to keep you glued to your listening device until the end. Len Cariou's reading is superb and compliments a fine mystery novel. I know that you'll like it.

This listen was completely enjoyable. Narration by Len Cariou was perfect. This is my first Michael Connelly novel and consequently my first detective..Show More » Harry Bosch story. The writing is excellent - great plot, nice twists and turns, great characters. I thought I needed a lot more action (violence?) to hold my attention and maintain suspense. Connelly has proven that that is not necessary. Good suspense does not mandate a lot of shooting, car chases and staccato dialogue. Just good writing.

For an audio book to be enjoyable and worth the read there must be two components. First the story must be well written and the plot engaging. Second ..Show More »it must be well read. In Echo Park both components are excellent. Both the dialog and the characterization of Bosch are well maintained throughout the book. It is as good as any of his other books, which I have either read or listened to all of his books.

it is a good mystery with a good reader (& a bit of sax thrown in. combo is delightful.

If you're a Connelly fan, you won't be disappointed -- he brings Haller and Bosch together in a completely believable way. Seeing Bosch through Halle..Show More »r's eyes (which shows him to be deceptive and rude) is a treat, and reminds you that character is in the eye of the beholder.

However, for me Giles' narration was a bit of a disappointment. First, Adam Grupper did a great job with Haller in the Lincoln Lawyer, and should have been brought back. Second, after you've heard Len Cariou or Dick Hill do Bosch, it's a bit strange to hear Giles' thin take on the character. Same for Jack McEvoy, who plays a bit part: Giles makes him sound like some cub reporter for the Daily Planet.

Still a very credit-worthy book, though, with a great payoff at the end.

I am a Michael Connelly fan but this book did not cut it for me. The unbelievability factor is just too high in both dialog and storyline. Maybe the..Show More » Len Cariou narration contributed to this problem as the father daughter conversations did not ring true. I prefer Connelly read by Dick Hill or Adam Grupper. I did, however, enjoy the Hong Kong scenes as I've been there a few times and could visualize the settings. I got through it pretty easily and enjoyed some moments but Connelly has written many better books.

The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly is his twentieth book and I have read them all. This book brings together Connelly's two famous characters: Dete..Show More »ctive Harry Bosch and attorney Mickey Haller. Haller returns to the courtroom after a long absence to take on the case of a Hollywood mogul accused of murder. The mogul's first attorney turns up dead, and Haller is assigned to the case. But it gets a bit sticky when it looks like the killer is now after Haller, and Det. Bosch shows up to "protect" Haller, even if it means botching up his case. I've never read any of Connelly's books before, and I'm not normally a fan of this type of fiction, but Connelly sucked me in from the first page with his masterful dialogue and action scenes. Haller is a compelling character full of hard-won wisdom and surrounded by intriguing characters. Bosch is a bit of a jerk, to say the least, but I couldn't help liking him as well. Connelly creates terrific scenes with tightly plotted suspense.

Another Michael Connolly book that is an excellent listen. All Harry Bosch fans will love this book. Very sad in some places and thrilling in others.

Connelley's newest brings his two most well known characters together in a masterfully crafted story of legal gamesmanship and investigatory prowess v..Show More »ery much in the style of Law and Order that is more heavily written as a Mickey Haller courtroom procedural than a police thriller. Harry Bosch plays a significant role, maybe as much as 40% of the story --and provides much of the action in the book, but it is the interaction of the two that adds some real personal interest. The half brothers are getting to know each other a little as are their daughters and these relationships promise avenues for some terrific storytelling in the future.

I think what impressed me the most about how Connelly executed this work was what he didn't do. There were at least half a dozen times in the book where he'd left the opportunity open for fairly obvious plot devices that authors over use to manipulate the reader or force a dramatic turn of events. Connelly's skill is in understanding that jaded readers expect these things and cynically predict them as we're reading. Just as we get to the point where we expect to turn the page to find the predictable forced plot twist, the story resolves in beautiful simplicity that feels far more real than any contrived t.v. show style drama. Bravo to Connelly for resisting the obvious. That said, there were some missed opportunities here that I think hint at future stories. For example, I look forward to some adventures that feature the newly acquainted cousins. I gave this one 4 out of 5 stars. It was a good story and well executed, but may have left a little too much of the sub plot on the editing room floor.

As the saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Sadly, I preordered this book from the main page, and the book listings don't show the narrator..Show More »s there. As such, I was unable to see who was reading this book. Heck, I didn't even bother to read the reviews because there has never been such a thing as a bad Harry Bosch novel. It never even occurred to me that the publishing house for a Harry Bosch novel would commit such an incredible blunder as to change the narrator, after 18 books, to someone not only unfamiliar, but inept! When I started listening, I was shocked to not only NOT hear Dick Hill or Len Cariou, but to hear this droning voice that almost put me to sleep.

Mcconnohie literally reads the book... doesn't perform it, but reads it. There were no attempts to assign a unique quality of voice to a particular character, no inflections for different emotions during the story... I imagine that most parents reading a story book to their child would do a better job than this narrator has done. It is so poorly read that I cannot even tell if the book is any good.

I will admit that after reading some of the other reviews that I didn't make it as far as they did! I gave up after only 30 minutes! Who makes the decisions on these narrators? Doesn't Michael Connelly have a say in how the book should be read? Why, on earth, would the powers that be take such a popular series as the Harry Bosch novels, whose followers practically count the days until the next book is released, and then disappoint these fans with such a worthless read (or listen?) This was a huge letdown. Shame on Brilliance Audio and even shame on Michael Connelly if he has any say in the choice of his narrators.

Can you tell that I am NOT recommending this book??! Let's hope they get it right the next time... too bad we will have to wait for probably a year to find out.

Im not sure about how I feel about these short stories and I really dont understand why popular authors are made to write them. They always kind of h..Show More »ave an "Im not really into this but I have to do it" kind of feel. The stories werent bad but its hard for me to really get locked into a short story like I do regular novels. As far as the performance goes...I like Len Cariou in all of the other MC books, he is usually spot on and as good as the previous reader of Harry Bosch, Dick Hill. However, for some reason he sounds weird in "Suicide Run", almost like he didnt have the art of narrating down pat yet. Had I listened to "Suicide Run" first I would have never gone onto other Harry Bosch books because of how weird Cariou sounded. Overall not bad, for 3.99 its good entertainment....exhausting a whole credit on the other hand for this is not worth it. You pay 14.99 for a gold membership so why would anyone give up a whole credit for a book that costs 3.99??
