Publisher's summary

The prophecy spoke of Thomas Kestrel: outcast, lord, sorcerer, warrior, and perhaps savior of the Kingdoms - if he survives.

In The Legend of the Kestrel, the first book in The Sylvan Chronicles, Thomas escapes the Shadow Lord's assassins, losing everything. Orphaned, alone and on the run, he discovers a world of magic and sorcery. With the help of a family he never knew he had he begins to master the Talent and the ways of the blade, acquiring the skills he'll need to survive.

Thomas discovers that not only must he stand against a High King bent on conquering the Kingdoms, but also the Shadow Lord, a creature of ancient evil who threatens to unleash a time of darkness and sorrow on the land. Thomas is torn by his desire to lead his own life and his duty to a people who view him with suspicion and fear. He knows that doing the right thing will only push him farther away from the life he wants for himself - and closer to his own death.

Can he prevent the Dark Horde from descending on the Kingdoms and extinguishing the light forever? Does he have the courage and skill to stand against the Shadow Lord?

poor narration

couldn't finish the book, the book itself was interesting, but the narration was so boring I couldn't appreciate the book at all. it was like listening to text to speech, zero emotion.

Great story but need to increase speed.

This is a great story but the narration is very slow. It is much better if you increase to 1.15.

Then don't say it is optional!!

I very much enjoyed this story. I found it to be well written, with excellent characters that enhanced and fed the storyline. Everything I desire in the stories I choose to read are in this first installment of what I feel is going to be a most excellent series.

Enjoyable story for whole family

Our entire family enjoyed listening to this audiobook on a road trip. My husband read the book many years ago and suggested it to our son. The only reason we gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because we all found the narrator a little difficult to listen to.

Good book, Horrible narration.

I enjoyed the story quite a bit but the narrator's droning on and on was horrible. It was hard for me to finish due to that.

He sounded like a Robot.

Fun Story

The story is intriguing while the reader sounds like William Shatner. Chapter breaks are brutal!

Story Good, Reader not so much

I will probably do the next book since I'm invested in the story and characters. But I wish it had a different reader. I will probably avoid other stories read by him. while he did get somewhat better as the story progressed, he definitely ranks among the worst.

Just could not get in sink with the Narrator.

I liked the story line and made several attempts to listen but the narrator's reading spoiled it for me. It is hard to explain but the narrator seemed to drag out the last word of many sentences as though he did not want to let it go. Sometimes he would do the same to other words. I would find myself thinking "This is a good story but I could not get into the right mood or feel for it. I may later read this book but for now I am going to put it aside.
