About this listen

After: Jess is alone. Her cabin has burned to the ground. She knows if she doesn't act fast, the cold will kill her before she has time to worry about food. But she is still alive - for now.

Before: Jess hadn't seen her survivalist, off-the-grid dad in more than a decade. But after a car crash killed her mother and left her injured, she was forced to move to his cabin in the remote Canadian wilderness. Just as Jess was beginning to get to know him, a secret from his past paid them a visit, leaving her father dead and Jess stranded.

After: With only her father's dog for company, Jess must forage and hunt for food, build shelter, and keep herself warm. Some days it feels like the wild is out to destroy her, but she's stronger than she ever imagined.

Jess will survive. She has to. She knows who killed her father....and she wants revenge.

I buy a lot of books for my middle school students in my resource room. This is an enjoyable listen and I think they will like it. I thought the narrator was a little over the top and annoying when she was reading the girl's part when she wad upset ; it seemed a little too much and I would fast forward some of those parts. All in all it was good.

Good listen

I loved the storyline and that it flipped easily from the young protagonist sharing recent past events and he present physical, mental, and emotional conditions that are at play in whether she lives or dies. I also like that there is no cover up of extremely hard conditions and/or white washing the consequences of her decisions, right or wrong. Very good. I highly recommend it.

Great Story of Survival

Although this was written for younger audience I enjoyed it. I liked the honest practicality of it. How hard it would be to survive if you had no wilderness skills. I think what I liked most is instead of giving up, she got tougher.

Good adventure

Great story! A new author discovered. I loved everything about this, the characters, the speed at which the story unfolded, and loved that it didn’t have a lot of profanity. Great book

Fantastic book. Loved it!!

This was a fantastic tale. It kept my interest the whole way through, no lulls or slow parts. What a ride. Will look for more books by this author. The narrator also did a great job and I’ve listened to her work multiple times. Hint to narrator, look up the pronunciation for the word cumin; everything else was terrific.

Great story, well narrated

Chapter 34: "There ought to be more drama." -Jess

Its not that the story was bad by any means - you can see from my ratings that I enjoyed the story and narration. There were times that the narrator came off as a little over the top and her way of speaking reminded me vaguely of Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory but she was overall a pleasant narrator to listen to. The author definitely did not let the main character achieve all her goals easily but I do feel like the plot of the story could have allowed for Jess to be put through so much more and to be able to really show her growth better through the story.

Character says it best herself..

Excellent, engaging story. But not a feel good novel. Worth a listen when you have the bandwidth for it!

Great but stressful
