Publisher's summary

“Like being deemed a witch hundreds of years ago, being presumed a slut today is cause for ostracism, abuse, and death”.... Archetypes of “witch” and “slut” have been used to police female sexuality and punish women; now, feminists are reclaiming them as positive affirmations. This book unearths the sex positive feminist legacy of the witch in art, music, politics, and popular culture, connecting the fictional witch we love to emulate and fear with real women, past and present.

Kristen J. Sollee is instructor at the New School and founding editrix of Slutist, an award-winning sex positive feminist website.

Know your history

As a third generation witch (that I know of), I've only recently begun to explore and appreciate the heritage of these gifts. Having resources which take our tribe out of the urban legend and history books and being these amazing women into the light and perspective of modern day is crucial to normalizing and humanizing our existence. Thank you, Kristen! I've already downloaded the next book 🤘🏻🖤

Every woman should read

Amazing history of women and how we have been denigrated for owning our own autonomy or sexual identity. Every woman should read this book.

Ella

Great insight into the legacy of the witch and the roll she plays in society in our modern day culture. Highly recommend to spark the inner witch all women posses.

So perfect!

Perfect blend of witches, sluts, and feminists! She’s such a brilliant writer, speaking on topics that matter so much. I love that we’re reclaiming these words as our own!

Sollee's connections really resonated with my personal experience and education of all three labels.

Uh Ok

I did enjoy the research and exploration of the 'witch' as a construct for female empowerment, both in past as persecuted individual and in the present as power symbol.
What I did not enjoy was the constant bald assertion of context for decision and purpose of people who lived 400 years ago that the author has never met. Through the lens of the future it may have been easy to do. The author questioned why women like Tichiba, strong in their faith, could not be celebrated for their knowledge and perspective. Because at the same time people of different faith were strong in their beliefs and oppressing others. Faith is not a pathway to truth and while I agree it can lead to building identity it should not be revered.
Solutions of reclamation for women's power through art are fine. But perhaps outlining how the witch brings forth a more powerful woman in aspects that can help women now. What do women want? How can this help?
I stopped with 1 hour and 46 minutes to go.

I wish this book lived up to its title

10 years ago I would have been blown away by this book, but now what the author has to say seems basic and uninteresting. It could be that we’ve integrated a lot of these ideas on a more systemic level or it could be more personal moving on to other discourses.
I love the title and I love the spirit of the book. I wish I had actually enjoyed its execution. I stopped listening a little more than halfway through.
Either way, the author has done great work in feminism. I’m still happy the book was written. And, if it calls to you then it’s probably what you need to read right now in your journey.
