A Rogue Traders Novel

As the Indomitus Crusade begins, Roboute Guilliman tasks the Davamir Compact to find a route across the Great Rift.

Listen to it because

Witness the deadly politics and incredible wealth of the Imperium's privateers, as three powerful rogue trader dynasties put their considerable assets to work for the greatest crusade in millennia.

The story

Proud Lamertine. Fierce Helvintr. Cunning Radrexxus.

Since the halcyon days of the Great Crusade, these noble rogue trader dynasties have plied the void in the Emperor’s name, answering to whomsoever sits as the king of the Davamir Compact. There has been profit and adventure and abundance in these times… Yet now the galaxy is changed, divided by the birth of the Great Rift. As plans are drawn up for the most immense crusade imaginable, the Emperor’s reborn son demands that the Compact seek a way across the Rift.

When tragedy and betrayal threaten all their endeavours, it is the Lamertine heir, Erastus, who must rise to the fore—to guide the disparate forces of the Compact in service to their sacred mission, to avenge the wounds done to them by hidden hands, and to reveal the darkest secrets threatening the Imperium’s dreams of unity…

It was ok.

The overall plot was not mysterious at all. Just kept waiting for it to be revealed. Really was looking forward to it but was overall let down.

excited for what comes next!

Initially I started listening to this story because I enjoyed the Grim Repast and wanted to hear more of the author's work. Usually I pop on a book during my commute and it takes me a week or two to get through one of these but this one I finished in two days. I just couldn't get enough! This was not only because of the high caliber of the writing but also the extremely engaging performance of the narrator. I haven't heard any of Joe Shire before but I'll absolutely have to go and seek out more of his work now. He brought the story to life in a way that many of the Black Library narrators quite often miss.

To me, Void King is one of those few 40k novels that I would recommend someone read if they had no exposure to Warhammer whatsoever. Certainly an understanding of the lore will enrich anyone's experience with the story but this is enough of a well written book that you'd be able to enjoy yourself regardless. Marc Collins tells an interesting story with interesting characters without relying too heavily on the Warhammer tropes that the world is steeped in. Highly recommended!

Lost Intrest

I'm not sure what happened, just lost interest in the book half way through. I feel that all the core characters in this book were just copy pasted from other 40k books. I stopped with 3 hrs left to finish, and I don't really have any sense of the overall story beyond whiny kid is desperate for daddy's approval.

It was an alright 40k book

Like the title says it was an alright book, entertaining for the moment but nothing special at all, there are both better and worse 40k books. Though it sounds like something is wrong with the recording, it sounds hollow and wrong, though the reader did a good job.
The book also just ends fairly abruptly and the epilogue just makes it worse. Even if a book is setting up for a sequel it should still have a proper ending.

fantastic book

I hadn't read alot of Marc collins prior to this but this was a truly fantastic book. I'm a bit biased because I love rogue traders, and we haven't had many books about them lately, but really fantastic storyline overall.

Best spinoff so far (spoilerless)

voice actor killed it, spectacular job. story was great, the hints in the mystery were subtle enough to the point where a lore nerd could put it together just before the climax in the way that makes paying attention pay off. need a sequel asap.

Joe Shire is on another level

So yeah the story is your ordinary wh40k story of betrayel and snobism but I tell you the narrator man… that soft deeeeeeep voice. I was like what is that. Couldn’t even concentrate on the story. Some rich bois father got the stabystaby and he was like crycry but happy at the same time and on on. But the voice. If I would have that kind of voice I would stick tube in my ears and just talk on the other end. I mean c’mon BL why is this dude just in 2 side line books (I leterally searched by narrator not author). I get it you haven your keablles an tobyes but just listen to this dude man. Fluffy silky storm in the middle of the biggest waterfall. Ok I’m out

Exactly whar I wanted

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I was expecting one thing and got a something in my opinion better. I know I'm being vague but I don't want to give away to much. This is a great look into the Rogue Traders and I hope they keep this up.
