Publisher's summary

Book one in the Bequin series.

Listen to it because:

It's an intriguing and evocative story that shows characters you know and love through new (yet strangely familiar) eyes, forging a stunning mystery that will leave you astonished.

The story:

In the city of Queen Mab, nothing is quite as it seems. Pariah, spy and Inquisitorial agent Alizebeth Bequin is all of these things and yet none of them. An enigma, even to herself, she is caught between Inquisitors Gregor Eisenhorn and Gideon Ravenor, former allies now enemies who are playing a shadow game against a mysterious and deadly foe. Coveted by the archenemy, pursued by the Inquisition, Bequin becomes embroiled in a dark plot of which she knows not her role or purpose. Helped by a disparate group of allies, she must unravel the secrets of her life and past if she is to survive a coming battle in which the line between friends and foes is fatally blurred.

I can't put it down.

I haven't finished this yet, but I'm listening voraciously! Surprisingly to me, despite there being a different narrator than previously used, special attention has been given to maintain each characters "voice" through the previous novels. the accents used are consistant with the returning cast.

excellence

bought this 10 years ago when it first came out and didn't give it the time it required to properly be read, now that the second book in the series is out I have revisited and boy did I miss a excellent story.

Not one of Abnett’s best

This book left me wanting - the whole first ten hours are a way too long set up for the end of the book and, I assume, the rest of the series. It’s ok.

Roller-coaster!

it is good to read/listen to another story with Eisenhorn and Ravenor. this time through the eyes of a very confident but confused young woman, who is the key to everything. excellent!

Wow

Abnett does indeed deliver an excellent book that stands out in the 40k universe. I finished it in one sitting.

Dan Abnett with another AMAZING book! Must LISTEN!

Just WOW, this book has it all, great story, characters, performances, easy to follow and a rich deep backdrop. This book is worth listening to MULTIPLE times that is how great it is. A must pickup if you enjoy any Warhammer stories, especially if you enjoy Eisenhorn and his series. Pick this up, you will thank me later.

The Emperor protects.

It’s 40k, it’s Eisenhorn/Ravenor! For those of us who have been there from the beginning this is a treat. I really wish they did a double narration. The reader does a good job but fails to get the feel of the male characters we all know and love. Still, this novel(s) are a work of art and in my opinion Dan Abnetts best work.
