Publisher's summary

Movie star 101: A smile hides all pain.

Quellcrist King has been playing a part his entire life. The more famous he becomes, the more he hides. The only person he ever let see the real him rose with him from nothing to the very top.

They were the king and queen of Hollywood - and then she wanted a divorce. The only way to survive his depression is to bury himself in work. If he can be a character, maybe he won't have to remember himself. A gay role can't be any different than playing a straight one, can it?

But instead of finding solace in the character, he finds it in his costar. Hale becomes his best friend, his lifeline, the light in his darkness. Quell is forced to examine everything he thought he knew about himself while filming intimate scenes with Hale that feel more real than anything ever has before.

He's lived his entire life following the script. What would life be like unscripted?

Contains mature themes.

Such a beautiful story

This book is one of my all time favorites with an MC who struggles with depression and anxiety. As Always with JR Gray books, it’s an emotional ride with lots of steam, a happy ending (HFN as this is book 1 of series) and a character I wanted to strangle!

Unscripted

Both narrators did an amazing job bringing
this book to life.
I’ve never read anything from this author and never read a book like this. I usually don’t like slow burn I usually get bored and frustrated. I did not want to put this book down! I was interested from page one. I loved the two characters, they become friends first, it did take a while for them to get together. Right when I was starting to get restless they finally admitted wanting each other. This book was amazing keeps you interested the entire way, I do wish it was longer since the first 74% of the book is built up to then coming together. I feel there wasn’t enough of them as a couple. But there is a second book out and I can’t wait to see where there story takes them.

Heat and Heart!

JR Gray always brings heart with equal amount of heat in his stories. In Unscripted, Quell and Hale fall into a fast friendship that gets you invested!

The narrators are a perfect match and make the story special with their chemistry and easy tones. Devoured it in one day!

Joel is great as always but John has to go

I loved this story so much that, when I got to the point I couldn't stand John Solo's narration anymore, I bought the book on Kindle just to finish it. And even with that, I still finished the whole book in under 24 hours. There are some issues with the ebook as well but this review is specific to the audiobook. Normally I love when there are two narrators but this time, I wish it had just been Joel. I know what I am going to get with Joel. I know it is going to be a pleasant listen and he has yet to disappoint. As much as I would like to enjoy this again, the narration issue is so bad I returned the audiobook and I have difficulting reading for long periods so I rarely actually "read" these days.

In conclusion, get the ebook/paperback unless you have listed to John Solo narrate before and like him (different strokes for different folks and all that).

slow burn!

this story was so good you even got invested in the background story of the film they were shooting. A friends to lovers with lots of baggage and addressing a real problem of depression. The friendship grew and the waiting for the mc's to realize what the reader sees coming is torture, a nice torture but still. I would love to see more of their story. They will stay with me for a long time. The 2 narrator audios I usually stay away from, but Joel Leslie and John Solo are very good at what they do and made it work here.

Loved it!

My two favorite narrators reveal the two different personalities of these characters. Fun amd low angst, this is definitely worth multiple listens.

So sweet!

It’s rare that a solid story gets not just one, but two amazing voice actors to perform, but this one does! JR Gray has written a lovely self-awakening/coming out story and Joel Leslie and John Solo give it life. Their performances are real and immersive and a joy to hear. Time flew listening to this audiobook and I’m eagerly downloading the second book now!
