Beautiful Cover & Book

Self-esteem and self-sabotage are in constant opposition to one another. This audiobook honestly gives a personal approach to how self-sabotage affects one's self-esteem by utilizing psychology. The author does an excellent job of providing common sense advice on how to become more self-aware of negative character traits that you are holding on to. This can not only affect your personal relationships, but also your work life. The author discusses how to build and maintain relationships with other people by developing skills that are complementary and allow you to become technically competent in certain areas of your life, whether that be in your career, health, relationships, or finances. The narrator does a great job of voicing the book and helps the listener realize how to rise to their true potential.

I personally liked the section about quitting and walking away when things don't go your way. I tend to do that. I need to learn to be more persistent in that area of my life.

Addressing some seriously underrated problems

Self-Sabotage is not something that I was actively aware that I was doing to myself until I listened to this book. I'm so happy I found it! Sometimes we can truly be out own worst enemies and we don't even know it. The author expertly outlined how this concept can easily affect everything form your career to you health. This is an under discussed issue that effects millions of people all over the world and I really hope they all find this book and internalize its lessons.

Surprisingly Packed with Insights!

I’ll be honest. I didn’t think I would like this book as much as I did.

First, I could tell that Mia was speaking from personal experiences. She talks about dating all those losers, until she came to realize that she was still the common denominator in the bad relationships.

Second, this book gives fresh answers to the question of why we tend to sabotage ourselves. They are coping mechanisms when we can’t meet our needs. They numb us initially — like partying before a test. But, often, we don’t even realize we are doing it. So, Mia talks about becoming conscious of it — like realizing that we are eating the chocolate cake when we shouldn’t. She shares different causes of self-sabotage, including the trap of perfectionism (we never work on that project because we think it needs to be perfect) or the trap of comfort zone (we don’t leave a bad marriage because we are used to it; or we marry a critical woman who reminds us of our mom).

Third, I loved all the stories and examples. I didn’t realize how often I will sabotage myself until I heard all the ways I “could” sabotage myself. For instance, when we get a good grade or job, we tend to think “this isn’t real.” In fact, it is common for people to immediately lose things right after acquiring them - how tragic!

Fourth, this is practical with exercises to reflect and work on yourself.

Fifth, it is deeply insightful. I got emotional listening to some of it. After describing a woman in an unhealthy relationship, she comments: “We are conditioned to believe that if we let go of what we currently have, what will take its place will be far worse.” That really hit me. “If you have been programmed to behave in self-sabotaging ways, then you can program yourself to behave differently.” We are in autopilot - doing things we hate like working a terrible job without changing. Then, when we do get free time, we spend it with passive things like TV. The real problem is that we don’t know what we want.

I highly recommend this for the person who wants to understand themselves and have a brighter future!

A wonderful guide to identifying and fixing self sabotage

I loved this book. Although I was already aware and familiar with some of the signs of self sabotage, the author helped provide an extensive review and guide to other aspects in this part of my life’s healing journey. A great read and guidebook for anyone working on their future self!
