Publisher's summary

The goals of the budo - the martial arts and ways of Japan - lie in refining the body and spirit. These goals are not always the obvious ones - and are learned only through the guidance and direction of great teachers.

The techniques, methods, and rituals of the sensei can serve as guides to a well-lived life - and provide invaluable lessons for today's martial artists. This collection of essays includes discussions of:

  • The spirit of ryomi...
  • The importance of yuyo...
  • The significance of ma...

With its focus on traditional martial arts, and fascinating stories that illustrate key martial arts principles, Traditions will be required listening for serious martial artists.

Authoritative

If you could sum up Traditions in three words, what would they be?

Well Researched Information

What was one of the most memorable moments of Traditions?

The story of the Senpi and the Kohai brought it all together for me and the students I train with.

Which scene was your favorite?

In the story of the Senpi and the Kohai, the reader just read the story so dramatically! There is nothing like a ghost story read out loud to make me smile!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to it day and night, in the car, at work, falling asleep. I recommended it on my facebook page. I can't wait to read more from Dave Lowry.

A great book

Again, a great book by Dave Lowry. Asking fundamental questions about budo and marital arts, and to some extent suggesting answers backed on wast knowledge of Japanese martial arts tradition, both modern and old. Dave cuts to the bone about some western misconceptions about the various do's jutsu's etc. Even thou the book is written with karate as a somewhat focus, it includes everything from judo, kenjutsu, kendo and also tea ceremonies and flower arranging.

Reflections for any martial artist

I have read and listened to this book several times. Each essay is dense and intellectual simulating. I have studied martial arts my whole. I am currently a black belt in Hawaiian Kempo and this book has fed my spirit as a martial artist. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says but every thing he says is important to reflect on.
